Greetings all, I have a very cool 92 70 series Land Cruiset LJ77 with a 2LT turbo diesel that needs the head gasket replaced in the SoCal area (Oceanside) can anyone provide a shop in this area that can do it?

Thanx in advance for any assistance.

I'm sorry, I can't recommend a shop as I don't live in that area. However, what I can say is it's never the headgasket that blows on these. 95%+ chance you've got a cracked cylinder head. Budget a solid $3000+ for repair.

Yea, im tracking on the repair estimate and likelihood of a cracked head given the reputation of the 2LT, how did this motor ever get the "million mile engine" nickname?

I've never heard it called that, especially here.

Listen to @GTSSportCoupe - he seems to be the 2LT whisperer! Seriously tho, once they can keep themselves cool, they're a good little engine.

I've never heard that. That said, they can live a very long time with the right maintenance. The bottom ends are really well built and strong. Basically the head design had a flaw from about 1989-1994 or so. After that Toyota revised the head, and it was much better. The L engine series continued to be produced with few problems even into the early 2000's. Just get a new OEM Toyota head put on, and it will be good for at least another 250,000km if you maintain it well. It'll give you some peace of mind knowing the job is done too.

I really don't mind my 2LTE. Intercooled and tuned up they have good power even.

Could you provide some guidance with regards to where I could source a new OEM head? Would love to get this ol girl healthy again. Also a good cross flow radiator and intercooler recommendations.

Cheers!

Buy only Toyota OEM parts. Buy only the thickest head gasket (there are different thicknesses available). I'm pretty sure everything can be had from Toyota USA, but you can buy from Partsouq, Amayama, Megazip, or some of the cruiser parts suppliers around. This is the parts list I've sent someone before (below).

With regard to radiator, just get it re-cored as thick as possible. Replace or service the viscous fan clutch. Replace your t-stat with the newer 2LTE OEM 82C part.

Do some searching on intercoolers. Actually, do searching and reading on all your questions; this has all been discussed many many times before.

One more "newby" question, the parts list you have graciously provided seem to be specific to the 2LTE, my motor is a 2LT, are they compatable?

Thanx GTSSportCoup!, All I need now is a shop to do the work properly.
The good news is the temp warranty sticker indicates that it never got to hot so its possible that the head might not be cracked

Yeah, don't spend money on all those parts until the issue is diagnosed properly! I don't know what your symptoms/problems were, all I know is you thought the headgasket was bad (biggest indicator of a cracked head). But there could be other things leading to this symptom.

I think that nickname must have been created by people wanting to sell their 2LT powered vehicles. I can’t imagine how else it would come about! 😉
