I have a 1991, and the manual says it has a 25 gallon fuel tank, but everytime I fill it when below the empty line, it at most takes only 20 gallons. Are the gauges set to leave a large reserve, or is my gauge inaccurate?
Thanks,
Jeff

25.1 gallons. Mine takes about 20 gallons when the low fuel light comes on.

Would it be accurate to say it is a 25 gallon tank with a useable 20 gallons? How long can you run with the light on? Seems to me there is a pretty big discrepency.

5 gallons will get you 60 or 70 miles.... Seems like the light comes on at the right time. Is your tank dented at all? Doesn't seem like something to worry about.

Yup, that's what I get too. The other frustrating thing is a gauge bias. I can drive a long time before I use a 1/3 of a tank (by the gauge) but after that it drops quickly.

I'm about the same way. If i get gas right at empty (no gas light anymore) it's usually right around 20 gallons. I try not to go too far past empty because running out of gas sucks.

my 96 was the same, light comes on with 5 gallons in reserve, I was in an area with few gas stations once and ran out of gas I coasted dead stick down a long hill and into a gas station right to the pump, took a touch over 25 gallons to fill

When I fill my tank all the way up, it goes well past the "F" marker, is there where it reaches 25 gallons?

I've put 23 gallons in before.

You are absolutely right about that!

I’ve got a euro spec HDJ80, and i am wondering if my low gas light even works. I can go about 100 Kms or 25ish miles past the E mark, and still n gas light.

So your saying I got better range? Mind blowing! I cant believe I never looked this up lol. I always thought my tank was about 21 gallons, with close calls (in running out) always yielding around a 20 gallon fill. I can say I am glad there is a large reserve, and I have never run out. What does the needle look like with a half gallon left! this is an awesome thread, a magical extra 5 gallons awaits

5 gallons isn't going to get you super far at 12mpg but it's nice to know it's there.

Just a suggestion, everyone should test their own truck to see just how many gallons of gas is left in their tank when the low fuel light comes on, When i tested my 94 till the low fuel light came on, i in fact only had 3 1/2 gallons left in the tank, not 5 gallons as many members have mentioned above, Knowing for fact if you have 5 gallons, or only 3 1/2 gallons left in the tank just might make the difference between driving to the next gas station, or walking to it on foot,

Great suggestion! That's what I did on my 94 when I first bought it and the result was five gallons. Did the same thing a few more times to confirm.

My truck was exactly 5 gallons before I Changed the gas tank due to cracking.

I installed the exact same fuel pump and sending unit and now my light comes on with only 3 gallons left. I'm guessing I bumped the sending unit arm and it reads different now, bug I know exactly how much because I have coasted into gas stations at least 5 times completely out and filled to 25.0 to 25.3 gallons.

Are we talking from when the Low Fuel light starts to glow a bit when going around curves, or from when it's on solid, or from when it's bright as the sun and no amount of brake or acceleration can make it go out?

It matters.

From when the light is on solid, I have 5 gallons remaining (96 @ 12-13mpg). Just last week, drove it home from a LandCruiser club meeting and it was shing as brightly as the sun, and it took 23.5gal to refill it. That's about as low as I'll go, as the Fuel Pump is cooled by being immersed in the fuel in the tank - which miht become an issue in the summertime...

I assume the newer 80s like my '97 has the same low light feature. Not sure, since I've never seen it come on, but my gauge got fairly low running through Canada two summers ago and the fuel pump died shortly thereafter. Definitely not a good idea to run the tank real low very often.

I run my tank very low all the time. I'm still on the original fuel pump and I have 373K miles on it.

From the time the light first comes on and stays on, I have 3 gallons left.

I rarely fill up unless the light is on. Generally I run until I only have about 20 miles left.
