1991 FJ80 Towing Capacity Question

Hey guys. I'm looking at buying an Fj80 (1991) and had a question. It has the 4 liter straight 6. Im wondering what the towing capacity of this is?

Also, is there any common items I need to look out for?

It looks to be well taken care of so no rust is apparent but I'll look underneath.

Start by reading the FAQ in the sticky portion of the forum...

Towing capacity isn't much, 4-5000lbs.
With a fully loaded trailer it will be slower than ****.

I towed a dual axle u-haul trailer, I think loaded it was around 4,000. It was painful to drive on interstate where it was flat. Up a bridge here in Florida I couldn't get to 35. I'd try to stay underneath 4K LBS. if possible.

I've towed 4k pounds in my FZJ, that was bad. Could only imagine doing same w/ a 3FE.

Thank you for the replies. I would only town the random trailer of lumber for a home project or something along those lines. No boats or RV's so I think it would be ok. Sometimes a trailer of firewood but I'd just back it off a bit. I do live in a hilly area so without the trailer I assume it would be decent. I don't expect a rocket but I need to beat the gravel truck up the hill. lol

You will not beat anything up any hill with a 3f-e.

I have a 91 3FE and pull a Flagstaff 228D pop up camper, weighing about 2200lb when dry.
And while it certainly takes a bit to get up to speed (but who really wants to go faster than 35 when towing) I can certainly manage to run 65 on good stretches.
That being said, put a little incline in front of us and we will see 45 in short order.

I think 3500 is the towing capacity on the 91-2

I know its 5000 on the fzj80

But towing 3500 in Florida and towing 3500 in Colorado aren't quite the same

My '94 FZJ80 towed 2000 pounds or so of 1984 Volkswagen Jetta Coupe Diesel like it was nothing, and got 12.5mpg doing it up-hill.

I have a 3fe pig and tow my toys regularly:

Rzr + 10' trailer = 1700ish #
Mastercraft X2 + trailer = 3500ish?
17' Bayliner

Here at sea level it's not too bad w the Rzr & Bayliner. The mastercraft def slows it down acceleration wise.

On the highway it's fine w all 3

3500# is standard. Mine has the optional towing package which brings it up to 5000#. Not sure what that package consist of. But no way would I try to pull that much for very long. I pull a Yamaha Rhino on a tilt trailer and even on slight grades it will slow you down.
