hey everyone! Question about the throttle cables on me 3FE a little long so please hear me out.
traded my rusty beat up 1985 fj60 for a nice fj80. amazingly free of rust for a Utah truck, with a peeling paint job. Owner said it had trans clunk (automatic a440F) I think it’s why he wanted it gone. No biggie right? trans is better than full body rust.
Cut to 3 weeks later I’m still chasing this damned clunk Thing just clunk clunk clunked. Rpms go crazy while shifting. the thing would go from 1st to 3rd comically quick, and would bang its way there. I mean a toe curling bang it has a towing break which means trans was worked. Haven’t been able to move on to the fun stuff because of it. After some research and looking into the kickdown cable I think it’s called and the acceleration cable I found the issue (????)
Kickdown cable was stretched as you can see from picture. I adjusted it to compensate but still it clunked on with no powerband or smooth shifts.
While I’m staring at it in defeat smoking my cigarette I notice the other cable with the black boot connecting to a box on passenger side doesn’t move. It curls up instead of going in (red line on pic for visual) had a moment of engineering genius split the filter off my cigarette and shoved it in so the cable didn’t have anywhere to go but in (yellow arrow)
Now it shifts great I stay in the powerband and best of all the clunk is gone. I still have a clunk but it sounds “normal” now for an old auto trans. I’m wondering what the hell did I fix? I’m beyond the moon that it’s working better and I wont need a new transmission but I want to know What does that cable do and why did it cause my transmission to clunk and act crazy. Anyone know where I can find a replacement part or threads with more info on this? don’t really wanna keep my cigarette butt mod in there but if I have to I will. Im also planning on getting rid of all the old fluid and maybe a Rodney party trick flush to smooth the ole girl out.
Side note my idle is at 900 now when it used to sit at 600 because I screwed the nut adjustment on the cable before realizing the thing wasn’t supposed to bend like that
anyone know how to get that back to stock
