Hi all,

I need some help diagnosing a radio and speaker issue. My radio turns on, but no sound comes out. Is there a fuse for the speakers? I know there is one for the radio, but since it turns on, I know the radio fuse is not bad.

Also, I am looking for an auxillary gas tank that will not break the budget. I would prefer not to use the ones that go into the spare tire area. Has anyone mounted a later Tacoma fuel tank on the driver's side to balance the weight better. Is there a longer fuel hose that would make it from the left side to the right side?

Im trying to make some modifications where I can use the camper shell over my bed as a sleeper when I camp out on the rifle range.

Im in Florida.

Thanks,

Mark

If it's the stock stereo it's a pain in the arse! to get it out cause you have to pull the whole dash to get to it!!! At lease in my 90 4Runner you did..... I'd first make sure the fade and balance are centered, then check all the speakers themselves, they could be blown, or damaged..... If they look good make sure the wires are hooked up to them.

Then if you haven't found the problem.... pull the dash.

Should only have to take off the dash surround - yeah, it's a pain. If it's the stock stereo and has an external amplifier (4Runners did, not sure about pickups), the amp may be bad.

I've had a couple of the stock 90's radios that stopped putting out any volume. The last one i'm fairly sure was because the speaker leads grounded out in the door jamb. I have also had some aftermarket radios do the same thing when played at high volume with the loudness on. A friend who used to be a car stereo installer said this can cook the internal amplifiers in head units. Don't know how true it is, but both of those particular head units worked fine through the preamp outputs afterwards.

I'm also not sure if the pickups used amps for the rear speakers but even if they did, 4Runner or Pickup the front speakers are powered from the deck and should work even if the rear amps go out (which they usally don't)

Hi all,

My truck only has the two in dash speakers on the lower half of the dashboard. I do not have any speakers on the doors.

Thanks for the technical assistance.

What other vehicle gas tanks, could I use or modify to put in the spare tire carrier. I am in Ft Lauderdale, and would like to know if there is a shop that can help install it. If I did go with with an auxillary tank, it would be cool, if I can rig a dual tank switch like the E250 Ford Vans and Trucks have.

Thanks,

Mark

Mark:

I have a 92 PU, same set up. You do it right, you HAVE remove the entire lower dash AND surround on the AC/Radio controls. I could do it, now, in about 5-10 minutes. First time, about 15-20 minutes because I had to find the screws. It is really easy.

FYI, unless speakers are powered i.e. self powered, there is never a fuse. I would suggest removing the left lower section, removing the speaker wires and testing it with a dummy speaker i.e. extra speaker before removing it all. That way you can at least isolate that there is either sound or no sound coming from the radio. Granted, it will only be the left side, BUT rarely does a radio that simple lose just one side i.e. the test more than likely will indicate for both sides.

Radio replacement is also very easy. Just got to get in there.

Good for you i wish i could drop some of my problems on those vultures:grinpimp:

Well here is the skinny about Circuit City. They have a web special for a Jensen CD player for 89 plus free speakers. The catch is that its 10.00 less for the radio so I will have to pay 40 to 50 for the radio. My electrical skills suck, and its one less headache.

I should have my sleep platform finished tomorrow. I need to get some 3 inch woodscrews to secure the top sheet of plywood, and some self tapping screws for the angle brackets. I am using pressure treated plywood that I pillaged from the hurricane shutter from the rear sliding glass door.

Ill probably get the 90.00 truck tent that bungees to the camper shell, and start getting the goodies together.

Thanks to all,

Mark
