FOR SALE: 90 4runner SR5 / Awesome Daily Driver / Very Capable 4 X 4
I have a 1990 Toyota 4runner that I am selling. I am selling it due to my insatiable desire to own a similarly built diesel powered 4runner for long expeditions to Mexico and surf and snow 4wheeling trips in the Pacific Northwest.
I bought this 4runner last May from the original owners in the mojave desert north east of Los Angeles. It has no rust to speak of and the interior is pretty much immaculate for a '90. It is a grey houndstooth interior with an auto sunroof and a hi power Pioneer cd player stereo. There are very minor dings and light scratches but again for a '90 it is pretty awesome. The family that owned this before me had seat covers on it since they day they had bought it. We are non smokers.
I mainly have used the 4runner to transport myself and my family to and from our remote home in the mountains of Northern Idaho. We drive this 4runner over and thru 4 - 6 feet of snow. We no longer even have to plow our driveway because in 4 low this runner will go anywhere. We also drove this sweet 4x to Baja this winter for a month long camping vacation. On which it devoured the nasty roads, trails and beaches of Baja
Unfortunately, it recently blew a head gasket and it has a bad cam and head. So it currently sits at my mechanics shop without a working engine. It could just get a head, cam and a gasket set but to be truly dependable it needs a whole new power plant. If you are reading this and seriously considering a 2nd gen 4runner then consider this. If a 4runner is $4 - $6 k and does not have a new motor or very recent professionally installed head gasket the chances are that you are headed for trouble and expense. Do some research on the v6 Toyota engines and you will quickly learn that buying a rig with a professionally remanufactured engine and a warranty is much cheaper and more reliable. Or look into the option I have presented below regarding the Vortec 4.3 conversion which offers much more power and torque (but also more cost). Also, consider that the ring and pinion gears and lockers were assembled and installed professionally by J.T's Parts. Everything has been done right the first time ensuring reliability and long life.

This 4runner drives amazingly well down the road and anywhere off the road. I have rotated the 1 year old tires every 5k miles. It is literally quite amazing when in use on the snow, mud or sand. I have never wheeled this rig in the rocks or anything extreme. But I have used it to get me into some very remote spots in Baja Mexico and Northern Idaho. It works fine as a daily driver as the True Trac limited slip front locker absolutely works great and is very easy to drive and turn even when locked and in 4 low. Our driveway is at 3500 feet above snow level and we live near the 46th parallel and we get a lot of heavy wet snow. When the snow starts to really dump and my neighbors are parking down the road and snowmobiling in me and my wife and 3 year old are still driving all the way into our mountain - top - end - of - the - road home quite easily. Sometimes when the snow is really deep I will lower the tire PSI to around 5 - 10 PSI and float on top of up to 6 feet of snow that has not been plowed all winter! Also, I have driven this for many miles on untracked sand beaches of Baja. It drives easily over sandy stretches that would seriously strand most "4wd's" out there.
- This rig does have some peeling up of the clear coat on the hood and some fading on the roof as a lot of these early 2nd gen's do.
- The antenna broke off but is easy to fix.
- Extra front end parts are included with the sale
- The auto lock system works but occasionally wont unlock all doors when flipped.
- JDM fenders show some signs of wear and have a couple of small cracks. If buyer chooses option b or c I will touch up with paint and crack filler for that finished look.
I have most all of the receipts for this very capable 4wd 4runner.
Now for the options and pricing:
OPTION A: Take this well built 4runner as is with current engine block, resurfaced heads, etc for $6,800
OPTION B: 4runner with brand new remanufactured Toyota V6 3.0L engine professionally installed with brand new Toyota OEM clutch, K & N Air & oil filter $9,500 (engine carries 3 yr/ unlimited mileage warranty with nationwide coverage.)
OPTION C: 4runner with Chevy Vortec 4.3 engine conversion, professionally installed with 4 core radiator, performance headers and many more cool custom conversion parts from Downey and Northwest Off Road. Price $TBD (contact me for options and I will submit an estimate for your review)
As a bonus if you choose options B or C this 4 runner will come with fresh exterior paint and clear coat where needed on the hood and roof and I will touch up the JDM fenders just to give it that finished look.
Additionally, I will consider delivering this 4runner just about anywhere for only the cost of gas. I will pay for my own return trip in most cases (will have to review your offer first).
My goal here is to put this well built 4runner into the hands of somebody who needs / wants it. I would put a turbo diesel in here myself but I need a 4 cylinder to start with and I have found that vehicle with the auto tranny that I want/need. I can't afford to keep both vehicles and as a matter of fact I am also selling another 90 4runner I own that is also locked and lifted but wrecked a bit. It is posted here for sale as well.
Feel free to ask me any questions you might have about this rig or any of the build components on it. With a good motor this thing will last for 100's of thousands of miles.
