So I just bought an FJ60 off from this sight so my 62 has to go. It's a sad day for sure, but unfortunately, my mechanical ability is limited to loving (and not fixing) these awesome vehicles. In my opinion, I am giving this thing away to make the wife happy and freeing the space in my garage. I will also post on craigslist, etc. but it sure would be nice to get this to someone who appreciates her and will make her great. I have taken this to at least 5 mechanics for various work (haven't been able to find that true FJ guy), but all have said this beast will go forever. I have (or at least will) post as many pics as possible when I figure out how, and will answer any questions.
The good:
1988 with only 117k miles on original 3fe engine.
Brand new Mickey Thompson 15*8 Classic II rims
Brand New BFG AllTerrain 31's
AC converted to R-134 and blows VERY cold
Newly installed second Trans cooler
All fluids flushed and running synthetic per this site's recommendation
All new exhaust with 2 new catalytic converters
New brake components
New Sony Radio with Bluetooth, streaming, and back-up camera on large display
VERY clean interior- Front seats are not original, but rear and all side panels are.
Dash is flawless, no cracks
All work performed by real mechanics and I have the paperwork. I have cleaned her and changed the oil (trying to learn more)
All manual locks and windows. I know some will view this as a negative, but I like not worrying about the electronics breaking
The bad:
Rust
Electronic 4WD wont engage when pushing button. Best guess is the solenoid but not sure.
Emergency brake needs adjusting.
Rear wiper fluid line has a leak (motor works great).
Here is the story on the rust. You will see the body rust in the pictures. Other that what you see, the body is in great condition, paint is very good in my opinion. The previous owner had a family member who worked for Toyota. At my request (and probably a bad idea), I had this mechanic clean the underside and coat with a Toyota product designed to keep the newer Tundra's from rusting. This product was used for a Tundra recall years ago. Everything looks good and black, but requires scraping or something to get down to the actual metal.
Fast forward almost 3 years - I got two estimates to repair (I finally wanted to lift the suspension, Linex interior, etc) so figured I'd have any rust issues resolved. First quote came in at $5,023 to repair all the rust issues. I have the estimate if you care to see everything they found. The second guy scraped some of the rust-proof agent off and decided he didn't want to go any further - told me to swap frames but gave me no estimated cost. BOTH of these guys said it would be fine if I did nothing and continued to drive her - did not think it was a safety issue, but should address before lifting suspension. I hopped on this site and found a replacement rig instead - the 1986 FJ60 with 350TBI, Linex lower body panels, and running 35's from JRMudder84. Just made more sense for me to buy the rig since it had many of the upgrades I wanted.
Pictures to follow, but looking to sell for $6k. I have over $12k invested, but I get it - rust is enemy #1 on these cars so I shouldn't expect to get my money back. This baby has got LOT left - she is very clean with only 117k miles. Feel free to email me at rsboray@yahoo.com with any questions, but please note I know virtually nothing about cars, so compression, this, that I cannot answer.
