Vehicle has 350,000 kms (approx 220,000 miles). All stock except for an OME lift, 33x11 BFG ATs, and 4.56 gearing. It has been a great vehicle and I rely on it to take me all over Western Canada for work, which includes a lot of highway driving and about 20% off highway (washboard, mud, etc).

This issue I am having is a high pitched squealing sound when under load. The noise occurs when I get to a hill or am trying to pass (on rare occasions) and the truck shifts down. So hauling, downshifting, and revving higher seem to lead to the problem. I've noticed it on a few occasions now. The weight of my gear and myself comes to about 1000 lbs and I pull a trailer which comes in at 1100 lbs including load. The problem seems to have manifest itself as temperatures have become warmer, because it didn't sqeal at all during winter.

I am guessing that this will be a smog pump issue, though it is difficult to re-create while diagnosing in my driveway. Belts look good at 1 year old and are at the correct tension. Do you think I am on the right track here?

I am aware of the powersteering pump leaking fluid to the smog pump causing bearing failure. I have access to a new oem powersteering pump, but the smog pump is no longer available from Toyota. On visual inspection, everything looks good.

From searching through the forum, I see that Jim C has an idler as a replacement. But would this work on the 3FE? Most of the threads that I have gone through are refering to the 2F in the 60 series.

Or better yet, perhaps it is another problem altogether. Any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks.

The more I test it, the more I am confident that the high pitched squeal that I hear when revving high and under load is a belt driven accessory issue.

The p/s pump, smog pump, a/c, and alternator are all stock originals to the truck. They all sound good and feel good.

Anyone have any suggestions or similar experiences?

Thanks.

could you remove one belt at a time and isolate the problem? that way you'd know for sure which belt is causing the noise. could be something as simple as a belt bottoming out in the pulley.

I can't say for sure, but I would tend to lean more toward it being the belt for the alternator. The smog pump and power steering have a pretty steady load (at least when not turning hard). Whereas the alternator varies depending upon the current draw. Likewise, the waterpump moves more water the higher you rev so I suppose it too also has more resistance as you increase rpms.

In short, I wouldn't assume it is the smog pump or PS pump - especially given the cost of those two items

If you have ensured you have the proper belt tension and they don't look glazed, my next step would be to remove the belts and check the bearings in the you various accessories.

Thanks for your help.

I have access to an alternator so I will swap that out. I am still fearing it is the smog pump because the noise only happens at high revs.

A friend of mine, who doesn't even drive, let alone know anything about vehicles, was intrigued by the purpose of the smog pump when I was explaining it to him. He was in the truck and I was trying to re-create the sound. It happenned only once and it was very brief. But to him it sounded like whistling.

Anyways, I appreciate the advice, and 88, thanks for the link. I will dig into it some more.
