1987 Turbo Diesel HJ-61 left hand drive white in Nor-Cal $18,000 or best offer

Well with the changes in family and job it is time to sell my turbo diesel HJ. This was originally an HJ60 that I imported myself from Canada and I have swapped the frame for a rust free California FJ62 frame, and a fully rebuilt 12HT engine with A440 extreme auto trans from Rodney in Australia. A couple years ago I also swapped bodies to a rust free white FJ62 body with power windows and locks. It can cruise all day and night at 60-65mph while getting 20 MPG. It has almost exclusively been run on the highway as I have only driven it on trips. This truck runs flawlessly on biodiesel or normal diesel, this year I drove it to Utah and Tahoe and it has been great. And all this registered here in California as a diesel. This truck has been thoughtfully built and meticulously maintained. Thanks for your consideration. Truck is in Sausalito California, PM me with questions or call me at 415-320-6582 and leave a message if I cant pick up.

More pics can be seen on my Picasa Page

Also a video of starting the truck up with an open hood walk around:

  • Comes with lots of oil and fuel filters, extra belts, spare water pump, some old gauge clusters and lots of doodads from the various parts of the project.
  • Comes with full multi volume set of the mechanics manuals all printed out and bound.
  • Notes: I swapped the body on a couple years ago and it was 100% rust free, since then some of the places with nicks and scratches have turned brown as I live near the water, I suspect this light surface rust would buff out, RPM gauge does not work, factory oil gauge does not work, but digital one on gauge pillar does

Just an update on this. I have received some offers but I am hoping for my asking price. ( I Have unearthed $25-30k in receipts on this rig, the engine/tranny alone cost $14k.)

I have updated the pics with some more interior and underside photos as requested and also added a video of starting the truck and doing a walk around with the hood up:
http://youtu.be/GwN-tEtnpj0

I have also sorted all my stuff and loaded the boxes with all of my HJ related stuff that includes tons of spare fuel and oil filters, belts, etc. There is a fully printed set of the hj service manuals, a brand new U Bolt flip kit I never installed, my old 4:11 pinion gears, old gauge clusters, and lots of doodads saved from various stages of the project so I would have all the right electrical connectors and switches etc.

Thanks everyone for you interest, I am confident this great truck will go to a good home.

That has been my experience so far as well. I've been pretty thorough in my search and you can get a nice truck that's original with no rust 3500-4000 in gas and as soon as you are diesel it's 11-14k. Diesel is what I'm looking for so go figure it's twice as much...

The high roofs were probably RHD, which lowers their value. Zander says he spent 14K on the drivetrain swap, which explains why this particular diesel has a high price tag. Also remember that this engine is more powerful and quite a bit more desirable than the 3B or 2H. For diesels on the cheap, you're pretty much limited to Canadian owners who aren't greedy and have a rig that isn't rusted out. Good luck!

I kind of prefer the classic look of the non high top. As much as I like right hand drive, left hand drive definitely raises the value as it appeals to people who are not into the right side thing.

The two Vx's that recently sold both were 12ht engines in the $12-14K range.
Both were high tops and much more sought after.
RHD or LHD typically isnt much of a deterrent when it comes to pricing.

Most hj61s dont get into the $18k range mainly due to the fact that 80 series hz and 1hdts are only fetching $12-18k and come with more modern diesels-more torque and hp than the 12hts. Not to mention that the 80s have coil springs and beefier trannys/tcases.

No matter what someone paid to have work done....whether it be mods or add ons.....typically you can only expect to recoup about 50% of that cost when reselling a rig.

Just an FYI----

there were two "minty" VXs that sold for $12-$14k and had high roof option which arguably would be more sought after than non-high roof.

Just the market you are up against.

Where were those sold? Canada or state side? There's always the argument for "perceived value" due to the import laws.

One sold in the U.S. with diesel title.
Other was in absolutely mint shape -sold in canada and i think came to U.S.
both had h55f 5-speeds which are alot more desireable than the auto and usually reflected in the price.

RHD definitely lowers demand and therefore value-ask the Canadians who've been in the business of selling them, or compare the prices online of the JDM 70 series to the Canadian BJ70s.
I believe the high tops would be more sought after than the HJ or BJ60s mostly for the better engine, not the novel look.
The 80 series is a different animal, and your price comparison between the two series is probably valid, though the 12ht has same HP and more torque than the HZ and I'm not sure what transmissions you're considering. The A442 found in the earlier 80s is supposedly stronger than the later 80 series 343 and is practically identical to the A440 found in the 60 series.

Thanks to everyone discussing how much my truck is worth on my selling thread. That is really helpful ;)

Please do note those RHD imports generally have 200-300k+ in miles on them. This motor and trans were rebuilt professionally just 24k mi ago. That is a pretty huge difference even if you dont care about RHD. But on the RHD thing, it is a huge pain, you cant see around traffic on two lane roads. Drive throughs and toll booths dont work. But if you are interested making it easier to talk to the highway patrol to talk to you when they pull you over its awesome...

And How much would they cost to import and transport to California? And once you did all that you would still have a vehicle with 250,000 miles on its drivetrain as opposed to what I am selling with a fresh professional rebuild on engine and trans.

I assume since you are posting on my thread about this that you have paid for a 12ht/a440 rebuild and imported it from AUS and know how much that costs?

None of my calcs are including labor and I am not even recouping 50% of what I have into this in parts alone. Note It also comes with over $1000 in extra useful parts like the original diff gears, filters, two more BFG tires etc. The $14k is for the rebuilt engine and tranny HARD COSTS. I will post a pic of that receipt shortly.

Here is the receipt for the rebuilt engine and trans imported from Australia. You can see a larger version on my picasa site where you should be able to read all the text.
