1987 FJ60 throttle linkage

So, I had some down time and installed my JimC Aisan carb. I cruised through the reinstall with numerous beer breaks and I got cocky. I got it all buttoned up and notice the pedal is almost all the way on the floor. What gives? Is this system adjustable at all?

I will post photos as soon as I can shrink them down, although they don't really shed a lot of light on the sitch.

there is maybe one linkage that is adjustable, but there are several pivot points, so you may have missed one. Also rod 78105 has a right way and a wrong way it can be installed. Installed the wrong way and your throttle won't open up all the way. There is a post by fj40jim that describes the right way.

Thanks 2mbb,now that you said a right and wrong way, I think the PO had the rod installed backwards. I think once I swap the ends on 78105, it will be correct. I didn't even think of that.

Yea double check the linkage, most likely you have missed one of the points. I did something similar with my first carb rebuild.

Ok, so I think these pics will now post. I don't have on of the linkage all hooked up, but you can see my dilemma. The tabs on the vertical rod are pointing basically 180 degrees from each other, meaning when the tab at the firewall is pointing down the tab at the carb is pointing up. When I hook up the little rod to the ball on the carb (i.e. the tab on the rod at the carb is pointing down) the tab at the firewall is basically at the 10 or 11 o'clock position.

This picture is from someone else's thread, but the linkage that connects to the throttle plate (rod 78103) needs to run under the pivot rod coming from the fire wall. The schematic I posted above actuall shows rod 78103 incorrectly. It should actually be shown flipped end for end.

Hey Phil I hope this will help you figure it out. 78103 as you'll see in the picture needs to have its tab point inboard on the end closest to the firewall. This will enable the end closest to the carb to have its tab point down and slightly outboard.

If you can't rotate it to make it work, flip it around and it should work out.

Sorry it took me so long but Costco was out of my the correct size battery for my rig and I had to drive to a different location in Christmas traffic to get it.

Thanks for the pics man, no worries on timing. I think I have come to the realization that the PO somehow cut the tork rod and rewelded the tab in a different spot. See my new pics with the linkage hooked up at the carb. I have the small rod to the carb running under the tork (horizontal rod), with that done, look how high the tab is on the firewall.

Per a response from JimC, the long tab needs to be at the carb and the shorter tab at the firewall, as I originally thought the PO might have had it reversed.

See the new pics with it all hooked up. I'm searching now for a replacement rod. Also, if you zoom in at the tab on the rod at the firewall, you can see a weld that doesn't look OEM.

Yes, the non-stock welding is visible at the rear tab of the 78105 tork rod. Replace that part and you're golden.

Ace hardware will have springs like that. I’m not sure how long or how stiff you need to go, but you could buy a few different ones play to around with what feels right when you apply throttle.

Also, the return spring that attaches to the pedal and firewall is NOT the same as the one in question so I wouldn’t try to match them. I believe the one you’re in need of is a lighter spring than the one on the pedal.

Is that pedal spring accessible from the engine bay? Want to make sure its still there,,,, or would the linkage not spring back into place like it is?

The pedal return spring is in the fmdrivers compartment footwell. Otis item 78110A in the schematic I posted above.

It’s in the cabin. It attaches to the back of the pedal to make it return after you depress the pedal. You would know immediately if it’s missing because the gas pedal would be flopping around loosely.
