NOT MINE

1987 Toyota Land Cruiser FJ60 | eBay

This appears to be a very nice 60 in unmolested, original condition. Seller has posted a large number of pictures to detail to condition.

Low miles. No rust.

However.
HOWEVER...

The seller is not being truthful about the status of the Title. He is curb stoning this rig. Meaning the Title is not in his name and he is not a licensed dealer.

I won this vehicle on the previous auction for what I consider to be a reasonable price. But the seller played games about giving me a copy of the Title to show that he owned it, and eventually revealed the skipped Title. I offered to complete the transaction if he properly titled the vehicle in his name, but he refused.

Additionally, if you win this auction, he will try to pressure you to pay the full amount immediately.

So, as with any vehicle transaction... Caveat Emptor.

I will not ever deal with a seller who plays games with the Title. It's simply too much risk and too much work to find a remedy if things go sideways.

Oh, and one other thing to consider... Carfax shows that the rig had 135K miles in 2002 and now it shows 137K. So either busted ODO or basically no usage in 16 years.

It looks as if the VIN plate in the second to last picture was sanded.....

I get Ebay Email alerts for specific vehicle types for sale, notably FJ60s. This one comes up frequently in this alerts so it seems to be getting lots of views. I have taken a look at in the past myself. I am not really in the market for another 60 series but am always looking at whats available. I have always been reluctant to purchase a vehicle site unseen off of Ebay. This is a perfect example of one of the many reasons why. Luckily Ebay seems to have become more friendly towards buyers than sellers in recent years, so good you were protected here. Did Ebay have any input with regards to what the seller is trying to do here? Seems strange he would have been allowed to re-list this item again. Were you able to talk to them about what happened with your transaction? I might ask the seller if he has the title in hand to see what he says. Just for fun. Thanks for the heads up.

So I couldn't resist. I asked him about the truck and title. His description mentions he clean title in hand. So seems like something Ebay should look into. The sanded VIN indicates the guy is hiding something.

I always ask for clean title in your name when buying vehicles. Skipping title is just a way to save money on taxes and fees. And illegal.

He claims to have the Title in hand. But not in his name. I never saw an image of it, since I had zero desire to complete the transaction upon learning of the situation.

My priority is always to first determine Title status and verify ID of the seller. In this case, the seller's top priority was to push for immediate full payment.

Seller cancelled the transaction with ebay, and then as soon as I agreed to it, he was able to relist. I doubt ebay gives a fack about Titles issues. They just want their fee.

Reply from the seller:

The title is currently not in my name the title is currently in the previous owners name that I purchased it from I have a clear title that has been signed off by the previous owner and it is open for the new register owner

So essentially what you said. Still strange that he would not go ahead and get a title in his name. Skipping the fees is one thing but I would venture to guess he does not get a proper title because he can't for some reason. He stands to make some significant money here and I doubt he would let the title fees and taxes get in his way of doing that. But who knows. The fact that the VIN has been sanded tells me there is something fishy going on here as in maybe the VIN he provides is not the actual VIN of the truck, or that the title he has for it goes to another vehicle altogether. At any rate, what he is doing, as pointed out, is illegal. Thanks for the heads up.

He may be skipping title so he can flip it quicker. And save money. Vehicle sales tax is 8.1% in Nevada. That would be over $1,000 tax at the price the OP bid for it.

In Minnesota, it can take 2-3 months to get a title back from the state after you transfer it. Not desirable for a flipper.

Additionally, the person that sold him the car could have reported the sale to the state to get it off their name in the DMV system. Then the state DMV creates a title in the system in the reported new owners name, waiting for them to register it. If he skips title (which he is doing) and sells it to you, you then can’t title it in Nevada. If you register it in another state, Nevada may have it titled to him in their system, so now there are 2 titles. Problem

Surprised he admitted that in the reply. The DMV fraud investigators would love to have that verbiage.

Google “tax evasion”.

Really? Wow!

The great socialist MN tax collectors tax every vehicle. If you report a private sale price lower than what their computer thinks it's value is, you get a nice letter telling you what the value is, and tax due. You have to bring to them documentation substantiating your value. And they hold your title till you pay up.

Why wouldn't you title it in Nevada then?

Holy crap.
Had to look it up for myself...
Private Party Vehicle Sales

Given this new bit of information, I am doubly glad to have walked away from this rig.
There clearly is something foul afoot.

Incidentally, I asked the seller why he did not just title the truck when he bought it. His reply:

After I bought it I decided to sell it did not want to wait for title

I then asked him about why the VIN tag has the VIN removed from it. His reply is below:

It is just really hard to read it is still there it has not been sanded

When looking at my VIN tag on my 84 the VIN is clearly readable. No mistaking it. Looking at the photo he has, I could not make out a single digit. Maybe its the lighting in the photo, but I am pretty sure games are being played here.

Auction ended at $11,600

If the winner gets the vehicle, and is able to Title it AND there are no shenanigans with the VIN... then this was a steal. IMO

First off I know that seller I’ve met him a couple times at auction I taught he was a licensed dealer ? Idk maybe things have changed anyway! It should of still been bought even if the title wasn’t in his name that price is crazy!!! Low for a 130k mile cruiser

A scumbag flipper defending a scumbag curbstoner.

Dealer or not, certain states require titles to be Notarized. Not signed in front of the notary the title is worth absolutely nothing.
I bought one vehicle that was not titled in the sellers name. It was a nightmare to get titled in my name. I managed it by finding the original person on the title, but it was a pain.
