1985 HJ75 Pickup

I realize mechanical items especially electrical can be faulty even when new but it sure is frustrating considering I just had the alternator rebuilt.:bang: It is headed to a different shop today ( for a second opinion ) and if faulty back to the original shop for warranty work.
 
Have not been able to locate any "grounding" issues and am now focusing on a bad part within the alternator.

You prolly already checked....but, I'm guessing it's a bad ground or a wire is shorting out (i.e. touching metal on metal) somewhere.

After running several new "grounding wires" we now have the majority of the dash out of the truck. Hopefully we will succeed at doing something besides displacing a few spiders.:)
 
Despite being assured that the regulator was not the culprit in my electrical issues it now turns out that is was the bad guy all along.
Does anyone have a ( North American ) part number to replace my current ( 6 prong ) regulator?

According to ToyoDIY,the original part number for a 80 amp regulator for an oz spec HJ75 is 27700-57060.
It crosses over to a heap of North American Toyotas inc the BJ/HJ/FJ60 but the part# are different.

Is yours an Ingram's alternator as well?
 
Thanks for the part number. The alternator is a "Nippon Denso" model. ( not sure what amperage ).

The above part number is for an internal regulator and mine is unfortunately an external regulator. After some internet research the correct (6 prong ) external regulator has been tracked down and should be here by Friday.

Thats odd,I used a HJ75 australian model in the search.
You can get a internally reg 12v alternator with pump for $220 next time it plays up.

How much was the regulator?

Lets hope that is the end of your electrical problems for awhile.
I just got my Commodore back from the mechanic after 2 years of periodic problems with the dual fuel.
Seems to be all fixed and I wont have to push it off a cliff afterall
 
We took the part number you supplied to several parts houses and they all cross-referenced to an internal regulator. We did not bother with our local Toyota dealer because when you mention "70 Series" they get that "glased-over" look in their eyes.:) The correct regulator is on order and should be here Friday morning. I will post the part number as soon as it arrives.
The Ingram regulator appears to be rather popular on the older HJ75's. There is another 1985 model here in town that has the Ingram unit.

Hello,

"Glased-over look syndrome" seems to be a common ailment with Toyota part guys. The parts girl here (yes, a girl,) who helped me, was promoted; her replacement suffers this illness. Too bad...

Did Australian HJ75s come with the Ingram regulator? Or was it an easy to source replacement for the Denso component? Just curious.

It would have been a replacement for the original regulator.
Ashdown Ingram are part of the same conglomerate that owns ACL bearings and about 30 other australian automotive parts brands.
They have a reputation as a provider of quality electrical components for most vehicles sold here.

....While the two HJ75's in my hometown constitute a very "small sample" they both had the Ingram regulators. Either the original Toyota units have issues or people see the Ingram unit as superior or more reliable.

Cheaper and just as good. There is a huge range of quality aftermarket parts here. Most owners treat the dealer as a place of last resort

"There is a huge range of quality aftermarket parts here." ....That is the situation the "Jeep" guys enjoy here in the States. They can thumb through thick catalogs full of quality aftermarket products and I can't even get my local Toyota dealer to stock a 2H oil filter.:bang:

If I'm the Toyota dealer, I wouldn't stock the filter as well. (only 2/3 owner in the market):D You should make an effort to make friend with other 2 owner, "Where did you get your oil filter or regulator?" :idea:
