Sorry to hear about your dog.
The price you mention is usually reserved for trucks with NO rust. High miles could be an issue as well

Appreciate the insight...I thought NO rust was a unicorn, ha. I'll certainly adjust for right buyer that knows what they're buying

Hey Troz,

I have been hawking CL nationally for a 60 in this color for about 6 months. Looking for a rust free but not perfect truck. I feel like I have a pretty good handle on what these trucks are worth by now and I've missed out on a few no rust/better condition trucks that were priced where yours is or better. I did not contact you because I felt we would not be able to get close on price. Just my 2 cents!

I picked up an 84 with 200k a year ago in Colorado with 0 rust on the body and I've been crawling all over the thing looking in every bend, nook, and cranny and have yet to find rust on the body. The frame has light surface rust on it but nothing that doesnt brush off easily. I paid about $8500 for mine and drove it 2000 miles home to Vermont without any issues. Mine has faded paint all around and shows the signs of being baked by the sun for 30 years of life in New Mexico. I store it in the winter FYI....not Vermont salt for it.

Prices seem to be all over the place. I missed a gorgeous no rust one owner central valley CA (very dry) truck with a repaint and service receipts for 7K. Saw the listing on CL after being posted for under an hour and it was already gone. Then there are people wanting 25k for trucks with some rust and in need of service. I think 13-15k is the sweet spot for nice maintained no rust trucks if the seller wants it gone fast.

Appreciate the insight. I think part of the challenge for a seller is once a land cruiser hits 200k, it is ready for some real work. I have service receipts for close to $20k after new five speed transmission when mine blew six months ago. So there are two options for me since it just passed smog: 1) keep on driving for two years then reevaluate options and try to pass smog in CA or 2) pass it on to another cruiser lover and try and recoup “some” of the repair money put in.

$13k is pretty low for Bay Area prices given that’s a two week paycheck for some in technology (not me, but I’m not kidding about the wealth). Central Valley is essentially the poorest area of CA so it’s partially location, and a lot expectation. But that sounds like a good deal, missed. Since my mechanic who only works on Land Cruisers told me to price at $21k, I thought I was being reasonable and hoping to find a newbie excited to drive a truck like this. I remember buying it at 20 with pure joy. That’s never left.

Thanks for the thoughts, I’ll try to revamp the CL listing with some fresh info and perspective. Cheers!

I think you are highlighting some of the challenges to ownership and sale of a relatively higher miler.......”try to pass Ca. Smog” would reflect possible impending new Cats at this age. mileage, while a2F is a robust engine......it’s certainly in the final 3rd of life. And then wear items of note- TCASE - Was that rebuilt when mudcrak did the 5spd? and then all of the wear items like ,ujoints, starter, alternator, radiator, exhaust, sensors, ageing egr, etc. Which all can quickly add up $$$ for the non-diy,er.

Above is just the $ side. And then examining the alternatives/competition....you bump up against $17k high roof hj61s with 5speeds in the same price range......as well as 5.3swpped and locked versions that have had all the major items done already. so lots of tough competition for the same dollars in the 60series.......and thats not even starting to factor in all the $14-17k HDT/80s for people in the know.

Anyway- the Bay area is certainly a somewhat perverted market. the other day I saw a 2million $ Pagani driver who couldn’t figure out how to navigate The Prius’s on Geary St.......all u can really do is test the market and see where you end up given your time frame to move onto your next vehicle. Obviously not being in a rush is a big bonus as time can only help find a somewhat more needle in the haystack buyer who appreciates an older beauty and has the skills or paycheck to keep it humming.

worst case scenario is that it doesn’t move At a price you are comfortable with and you end up getting to use all the stuff you have already paid for......all the while being the cool kid on the block with the sweet 60.

Watch the market closely and things are finally settling down. Cruiser market is flooded with over priced rigs that are not selling. If something doesn’t sell in a few weeks, the price must come down, it’s that simple. I see rigs lowered $300??? That does not stoke the fire! A heavy under powered 60 will never return your investment, and California’s strict smog rules pretty much end any 60 ownership for me! Same cruisers on Bay Area Craig’s for months and months....in the end a rig is worth what someone is willing to pay!

This is great, bugz. I’m not a diy’er anymore so yes, mudrak can get expensive (we replaced tcase and clutch too). Been totally worth it to have a truck that runs well but there is always something that eventually needs tinkering. The nature of mechanical parts.

No one in my life likes the idea of selling the 60 and so true, I’ve always liked being the cool kid on the block. Now I’m an old kid w a toddler haha and no friendly cruiser waves on the roads. The bay is a lonely place for old trucks

I'll say fix the rust and sell it for 20k. Worst case you have a pristine FJ60 ;)
