My 1985 FJ60 is an all original truck with 201,050 miles. The original oil pressure gauge and instrument have been working perfectly. Today, however, I noticed on my commute to work that the oil pressure gauge was completely stuck at the top of the instrument at "H" during all engine RPM ranges. Once at work, and with the engine and ignition OFF, the needle dropped back to "L" as normal.
I turned the ignition ON without starting the engine, and the oil pressure needle slowly and smoothly rose to nearly the "H" on the instrument. I am suspecting that the oil pressure sending unit (or switch as I've seen it named) may have failed. Can anyone confirm this for me, or provide some guidance on diagnosing the issue?. I've searched numerous posts with no match to my issue.
Edit: With the engine running, I removed the boot and wire from the oil pressure sending switch. The gauge slowly dropped back to "L". I reconnected the wire to the oil pressure sending switch and the gauge raised back to "H". So, I'm pretty confident that the oil pressure sending unit (switch) has failed. Additionally, I found some trapped moisture under the rubber boot with signs of rust as well. All likely caused by my degreasing of the the engine... I'll likely start the process of ordering a new oil pressure switch.
Thanks!
