1983 USA FJ40 Registry?

I had a 7/83 with factory air and factory power steering. I bought it in 1989 and sold it in 2005 when I moved to Australia. I still keep in contact with her new owner and he is doing a frame-off right now.

I would be surprised to see many 1983s without Factory A/C or PS. Did it come with the chrome package?

There's always been a lot of discussion about how many 1983 FJ40's where shipped to the USA. 300 is the number that is normally quoted. Does a registry exist? Is there some Cruiser fan out there that wants to put one together? It would be interesting to see how many we can I.D.

You may be the very Cruiser fan to whom you are referring. You have my vote.

1983 FJ40 USA registry

Greg,

I've often wondered who was the source of that "300-shipped" number.
The published factory figures I have found indicate 6191 FJ40s were manufactured during the 1983 calendar year.
The only breakout I have seen is that 58 of those were "Euro-spec."

There were many specialized country-specs towards the last years of production, not just for the USA: Hong Kong, New South Wales, Victoria, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Oman, etc..

The difficulty with a survey is that not every owner can or will respond.
The only definitive answer would come from someone with access to old company ledgers, either in Japan or the US.

Along these lines, as with rare exotic cars, the number of vehicles remaining has a bearing on their value. I often read existing numbers for Ferraris and antique cars used to justify stratospheric asking prices.

But I've never read just how they arrive at those numbers very accurately.
I wonder how much is guessing or wishful thinking.
Seems like an awful lot of work to reconcile a production number(if ever found) with the number still in existence.

Anyway, good luck on your quest.

It had white spoke wheels and a white grille (thus no chrome package - I don't think we ever got that in the US) with the bolt-in dash and odometer with 7 digits (introduced in 1981 so not unique to the 1983).

When I sold her she had zero rust, Toyota front door vent windows, H55 5 speed transmission, Toyota 40 series tach and intermitant wipers. She was a fantastic truck and the new owner (her third) loves her. He is on Mud but does not want anyone to know who he is.

I don't know who came up with the 300 number but when the article was written on the history of the 40 series for the Trails in 1993, Marv Specter was told by one of his informants at Toyota that 300 was the number imported and thus that was the number used in the article.

I know of 2 in Denver. Don't know the owners though, just seen them parked on the side of the road.

One is white and is FJ40-364917, which looks like a July of '83 according to SOR's chart:

I need to go check on the other one...

Me too, but I personally saw it in Houston some years ago. No AC, that is, but it must have has PS. Interestingly I believe it also had the 4 speed and had always been a 4 speed truck. Was a tan truck, pretty good condition.

Here are two 1983's in GA in January 2013

I recently found this 1983 FJ40. It's had 4 previous owners that I have been able to identify. It's quite amazing that all of them appear to have babied the hell out of the truck. It has only 53,000 miles is wearing her original paint.

Like that alot!

Is it one that you own,... Or one that you came across?

Most importantly - is it for sell?

Cheers!
