Hello,

I was driving along the other day in my cruiser and the shifter went limp. I was working out of town at the time, so I took it to a transmission shop to get it checked out and they have told me that,

1) the plastic ring is broken on the shifter
2)the forks that actuate the selector pin is broken.

Issue number 1 I assumed was an issue.

I have not been able to dig up anything or how to repair issue number 2. Could anyone point me towards what steps next to take as I am not exactly familiar with how this part of the vehicle works.

He is basically saying that I need to free up the shaft, free up the fork, and then free up the roll pin. I have just recently started working on this car, so any help would be appreciated.

Thank you!

All USA FJ60s had a 4 speed transmission originally. Guys have installed the 5 speed (H55F) separately much later.

If yours is a 4 speed, you may likely only need the shift lever seat.

I’m assuming that “the forks that actuate the selector pin is broken” means something is broken in the top plate. If that’s the case, the top plate can be removed with the transmission in place. You’ll need to remove the front carpet, the shifter and probably the seats. Once the carpet is out it’s a 1/4 banana job.

Hello,

Thanks for your responses. I've found a drawing of a 5 speed shifter as well. My friend has a 5 speed sitting out on a farm, that has a working transmission(my 5th gear is broken)

How much work would it be to rip out a transmission on the other one, and put it in my new one? Keep in mind, I am an electrician, and this is a bit out of my wheelhouse.

Obviously as thought, the plastic ring is broken. Is there a way to test this top plate to prove it's broken? Or should I just grab a new top plate/parts and go from there?

Thanks!

Upon further inspection i've noticed that there maybe a bolt or pin missing between the part that connects from the shifter and the rest of this gearbox, which would help make sense why the shifter is limp. would i be able to get something welded in here, or replace the bolt if this is the issue? I don't really see any threads on it.

Thanks!

I’m not sure what you’re talking about, but the neck of the top cover of the transmission has two dowel pins in it to hold the shift lever. See picture.

The plastic ring is probably the white nylon bush on the end of the shifter - looks like it is stuck in the shift head, does not look to be broken to me.

That missing bolt will mean the shifter moves around freely without moving the shafts / forks. It's a high tensile bolt and should have a lock collar, though I would go with a threadlocking fluid when re-installing.

The rest of the cover/shifter assembly looks fine to me.

The question is if that bolt has done any damage to the rotating assemblies - you certainly want to retrieve it before putting the transmission together.

Aside from the botched sealer job on the top cover, the transmission looks clean and low mileage.
