Anyone want to throw out what they think this one may be worth? Obviously not the $14k he's starting at as there are no bids......I had the owner send me high res photos of the rear tub, which has significant rust on the wheel wells and it's obvious it was really bad at the rear quarters as there has been metal cut out and replaced. I know the wheels & tires are awful, but I can see past them to a nice set of stock steelies with some 33x9.50's!

What do you think the market is for a 1983 FJ40 that is rust free with p/s a/c and the "cool late model" dash. I have lines on one that needs finishing from a restore and considering on finishing and selling. Solid stocker?? 15-20K?

14,000 will buy a nice 100 series. Mike

True but a restored 83 with A/C and power steering is going up in value not down. I own a 100 series and is a much nicer vehicle to drive but never going to a collecter like some of the old FJ40s will be. To me a good investment on a FJ40 is one that is still original and in great shape or one that was imported in very low numbers. While the early years were low numbers they are not going to bring as much as the last couple of years they were imported. If the owner had gotten himself a set of 60 series chrome wheels. Had the chrome removed and painted white than lower it to stock height It would look more like a cruiser worth restoring. In the case of a 83 it's going to be worth more stock. You start doing mods and you group it in with the rest of the modified FJ40s. When in stock form you look at the year more.

At least that is how I look at the value of FJ40s:cheers:

Take it from someone who owned a 79+ FJ40....the rust that you see runs far deeper than you can imagine. Buy one that someone has already invested in putting a new tub on.

Unless you are dying for a factory original...OEM power steering and air mean nothing.

Doc

Location has a lot to do with rust. My 79 is rust free compared to some of my other early FJ40s. AZ has been kind to a lot of FJ40s.

As for factory power steering and A/C being worthless I base my opinion on how many times I see a post 78 listed somewhere and the question asked does it have the factory powering steering and A/C. I also base my opinion on collector value not a DD/off roader. Post 78 imported numbers went down while improvement were still happening to the 40 series. A 83 with power steering and A/C are about the hardest FJ40 to find in the US. But buying one for a wheel really don't make sense unless to get it cheap. Are the A/C and power steering the best for a 40? No. But once another one get modified away from original it just help the value of the one fewer stock ones left.

For a daily driver the 40 is a rough ride at best. For drawing attention the 40,60,62 are show stoppers. I dont know how many times notes are left on my cruisers or people want to talk about them. They have that early Mustang draw and remain popular with all ages of people. I think with the public the year 40 does not matter. MIke
