1982 HJ47 Troop carrier 2H Starter wear (5 Viewers)

Hello, I am chasing intermittent no starts on my recently purchased 6/1982 HJ47 Troop Carrier. I have some suspicions about electrical issues related to the Halogen headlights and the alternator but I have limited knowledge on the electrical side and am taking my time to learn what I can. The most recent trip was about 1000km and after 2 days of sitting did not turn over at all but there were dash lights. No clicking at all when starting. Any other times I have had a starting issue is if the vehicle did start normally, the vehicle is warm, but does not start. Just a click. A clutch start resolves the issue however I don't want it to be my only solution.

I am curious if the wear on the starter gear will be a substantial issue? Anything else to consider?

Those teeth were hammered. Yea you cleaned them up and they will last a while. Gears usually have some sort of heat treatment on the surface and its gone now. Next is the ring gear on the flywheel - good chance it is beat the hell out of too. Start looking for new gears. Make sure you batteries are good by load testing them. Make sure the terminals are clean and tight plus the wire gauge is rated for the load. The starter and gears will be happier with proper power and will last longer.

Depending on what businesses are available to you locally you might be able to have the starter rebuilt for less than a new one(?).



It also sounds like you also might have a parasitic drain on your batteries…I’d load test the batteries first then start looking for a drain.

Did the dash lights dim when you tried to start? Even with a low battery the lights will dim if the starter solenoid gets power. Did you check all the grounds. Would assume in Canada your dealing with more humidity and rust than here in the Southwest desert here in the US.
