Well, where to begin. Let's get some history out of the way.

I joined Mud about 12 years ago, a few months before I acquired my first 40, a spring green 71. I'd just come off the loss of a cherry 2003 Tacoma (supercharged, the works) and had loved the classic lines of the 40 series since college. A fellow in my same major had a built 40 with quite the street presence, and it just stuck with me. I'd go through 40 series phases from time to time, but after moving on from the Tacoma, I restarted my search. By August or September 2013 I'd found a great rig: one and a half owners, totally stock, 1971 (late 70 build), from down in the Lancaster area (SoCal high desert, Rosamond specifically). 'Runs and drives!', or so the craigslist ad read. Owner was a dentist, drove the 40 only in the winters, died in the early 2000's, vehicle sat, widow finally relented and sold to her neighbor (jeep guy) who had clear intent to flip it. He got it running, which spared it of a 350 swap, and he posted it to craigslist before even getting the new title. After 45 minutes on the phone, I struck a deal and we agreed to meet that weekend. I think we agreed on something like $6500. It was easy to convince my dad to join, so with the trunk of my Subaru commuter full of tools my dad and I headed out and settled in for the 5-hour haul south. Plan was to do a basic once over, and drive the rig north in one haul: Rosamond to Modesto. It worked, got the rig, a quick safety check and it ran well enough, got the feel for the 3-on-the-tree, and we took off. A quick pit stop in Lancaster for new tires and lunch, and we were cruising. Well, that was quite the journey. Lost the fuel gauge after about a 100 miles, was hemorrhaging coolant through the water pump seal so was stopping every 40 miles to top off, lost engine temp and oil pressure shortly after. That was enough. Pulled into a family friend's driveway in Fresno, patted the old girl goodbye and headed home. We returned the next day with a dolly and made the last 2 hours without event. Minor fixes over the next year, mostly just drives to get pizza, and I finally decided to do the head gasket...which turned into the rig in pieces in my garage. The classic mistake most of us make.

A new GF, a dog, lots of overseas travel, a career change, a wedding, 2 home purchases/sales, so much remodeling, 2 kids...you name it, and there was no chance I was going to get it back on the road anytime soon.

But the 40 itch was still there...as was bring a trailer. Bid on a lost a few good US 40s and some SA 43s, was never willing to hit the high prices they were moving for. Lost out on a good looking 43, but found the dealer selling it, contacted directly and he had a couple others. One being this project, a 1982 FJ43L-KC. Came home to CA about a year ago. Photos from before I took delivery.

I bought the 43 knowing what the typical SA rigs come with: hack repairs, cut corners, body filler, lipstick. No illusions there. I had about 70 photos, 3-4 walk around videos, and a few driving videos up and down through the gears. I was confident it was good enough to be my next 40 series and could be on the road quickly. and of course I saw a few issues right off the bat: missing clamps on the fuel/vent/return lines at the tank, rear tub was not OEM (but that could be good), gas tank supports were suspect, evidence of past rust on cowl and steering bits, sloppy brake and clutch hard lines and general sloppy engine bay. Nothing all too scary for a guy with a 40 in pieces and a massive parts pile.

I paid a price that I felt was worth the photos, and worth the gamble. Through the process and even to today, I should be clear, I have no issues with the price paid. There's a lot about this cruiser that is good/great!

And, on to some of the bad...

Yo Bro! … and 50+min post pause? In this tik tok sphere that’s like so OK Boomer slow. We waitin. As gen Z would say, this post slaps but now spill the tea because I’m going to be delulu unless I see this glow up

My goal is to keep this particular post current as the build progresses. I'll add issues as I go, and mark off others as they're corrected.

Frame/Structural:
  • 4" lift needs to go, vehicle only fit in garage with deflated tires.
  • Shocks are shot, stabilizer too.
  • 16" splits can go too. Have a set of 15" and 16" wheels, need to decide which to run. Leaning 16" with 235-85r16 or 255-85r16.
  • Crack in the frame at passenger side forward body mount/side step support. Seems isolated to bottom of outer C channel. Quite small from what I can see.
  • Loose rivets at various points at the front of the frame
  • 'fake' rivets in other locations (bolts shaved to look like rivets, in places they should not be.
  • Severely tweaked front fixed spring mounts, appears as though there was a collision and the front axle was pushed from passenger to driver, causing the fixed spring mounts to lay over by about 10 degrees
  • All spring pin retainer/anti-rotation bolt holes are stripped
  • Missing bolts, all over!
Steering:
  • Steering column issues, some discussed HERE. Rust, missing/broken fasteners, column and steering shaft length issues, rag joint falling apart.
  • Prior break to center arm, almost didn't catch the weld repair at drag link end of center arm.
  • End links are old, boots torn, add them to the list when I swap the stabilizer.
Electrical
  • Only dash switch that works is the wipers, which I find hilarious
  • Ignition is fully stripped out. About a month ago I ordered a key blank to have an OEM key cut. Wanted to make the sure key fit…truck cranked over on an uncut blank.
  • Headlights out, will replace with the Toyota H4 kit.
  • Much suspect wiring and add-a fuses open air in the engine bay/under the car.
Brakes
  • Front drums were something I missed. Not sure how, but I just assumed all 82s came with discs. It has drums, and they're leaking
  • Rear brakes more or less neglected
  • Parking brake cable is not correct for this year, 10-15 zip ties, no roller bearing, wrong clevis attachment at bellcranks, missing alignment guide at diff cover
  • Brake hard lines, generally just poorly bent, installed, routed.
Drivetrain
  • Waterpump leaks
  • All trans/xfer drain/fill plugs are stripped at the allen/hex point. Hoping the threads at the trans/xfer are still good, but not there yet
  • Oil pan has been repaired a few times, drain plug replaced with a welded in tube/rethreaded. Front of oil pan gasket at bearing cap is caked in RTV
  • Fuel and vent lines not fully seated, need clamps, hard/rotten.

Body/Cosmetic
  • General market 1982 models still had the cowl vent. This one leaks, and as I went to install a new gasket, found some rust. Also found a discrepancy with the available gaskets/damper plate. Will likely seal the damper shut.
  • Bib and front panels seem are out of alignment
  • Soft top leaks, here and there
  • Window rubber at doors and wing windows old/not aligned, air gaps
Interior
  • No heater, but has defrost vents and correct windshield frame
  • Rotary knob on pocket/glovebox is ridiculously hard to open. Silly, I know

Been slowly working on some big-ish work the past few months. One minor item was the parking brake. Rig came with a hacked together cable, and it worked well enough, but too many zip ties for my liking. It’s taken parts orders from no fewer than 4 vendors but last night the remaining parts came in: new aftermarket parking brake cable 46410-60150 for 80-82 FJ43s. It’s beautiful. Should work just fine. Only OEM I could find was eBay from the Middle East at $370, too rich for me!

Anyway, loosely assembled on the dining room floor, will get it installed tonight. Fingers crossed everything lines up.

Not my intention to let this thread languish. Been busy on the rig a few nights a week. Lots of progress. Back on its own four feet as of last night.

Got the parking brake cable installed Friday. Had to pull the floor mat to get the hand brake end lined up. Found more missing bolts, mismatched and buggered threads. Chased all the body holes and tossed in four new bolts.

Axle is a late 40 rear that I rebuilt for another project, flanges were setup for FJ60/62 shafts. Bolted a new flange to the current one and drilled out the correct pattern for these 1982 driveshafts. Deburred the holes and bolted her up last night. Filled the diff with fluid, hoping for no leaks. Axle was rebuilt some time ago…

Rear is about back together. New springs, shocks, fully rebuilt housing, just need to torque everything down and adjust the rear brakes.

On to the front now. Springs are in, need to replace the pinion seal/flange, some other small stuff. Biggest item on the front is navigating the mismatch driver drop / passenger drop for the brake circuit. Plan is to the leave the frame drop on the passenger, but convert my new front axle (fully rebuilt FJ62 outters / pumpkin on a 71 housing) to a passenger drop. Easiest path (I think) is to make a bracket that bolts to the pumpkin studs and will grab the soft line from the frame and hold the Tee. Then need to bend up new axle hard lines. Work in progress.

Does anyone know of a vendor that makes such a brake line bracket?

Pics from a month or so ago when I grabbed the front axle from my parts stockpile, aka my parent’s RV carport.

And a picture of my girls. They are a huge motivation for me (“daddy, drive us in red truck”) and also my biggest distractions from this project. I wouldn’t have it any other way.

This is the original 1982 drum brake front axle.

I’m hoping to recreate this tee/line configuration with a bracket that bolts to two of the diff studs.

I could weld on a bracket as Mr. T did, but like the bolted idea better for now.

What do you guys think?
