For Sale 1980 FJ40 all OEM except rims. Lots of body rust

This unmolested FJ40 is all original except for the rims but has a lot of body rust.

The rear tub has significant rust through as do the foot well floor panels. Some miscellaneous other rust through on doors, RR quarterpanel. Firewall looks reasonably OK.

The upside is that this is a COMPLETE unmolested matching numbers OEM 1980 FJ40 except for the low miles BFG AT T/A Baja Champion tires and white spoke rims. Only about 1500 of these were brought in to the US that year I believe.

Hard starts and some stumble mid throttle. Probably carb rebuild or timing issue though possible valve job needed.

Transfer lever is stuck in 4H, almost certainly seized in the the linkage pivot. No evidence of internal transfer issues.

In general the drive line is in excellent shape. Newer clutch. Clutch has no leaks, master and slave cylinder and pistons are in good shape.

Brakes are firm. Some pull to the right on application may be a caliper issue, proportioning valve or just a bit more surface rust on the left rotor.

Never had water in the transmission, transfer or differentials.

Heater works. Rear heater core OK, fan motor connector broken.

Headlights work (though corroded internally). Turn signals, brake lights, backup lights all work.

No fluid leaks. Some weeping around the oil pan gasket.

New OEM rotors and calipers. New radiator, distributor, belts and hoses. Newer exhaust. And BFGs have no more than 500 miles on them.

Frame rust is evident and people would differ on how severe an issue this is. I personally think it is not a serious issue for a restoration. There is some thinning on the rear gussets but other than that the frame looks in good shape.

Vehicle has never been in a serious wreck. Slid on ice once into a guardrail and damaged the LR quarter.

The roof got clipped by a utility pole diagonal cable, and a leak there has caused internal rust to the rain gutter.

All original emissions is complete: pump, EGR, EVAP, PCV, etc etc. Passes smog. Continually licensed, registered and insured since 1980. Original owner.

Has original rear seats. Need reupholstered obviously but they are there.

Original engine has ~205,000 miles.

1980 had a large capacity fuel tank hanging on straps under the body, not under the passenger seat or pancaked under the cargo. This is in good shape, though the gas gauge does not work.
