Hello,
I have a BJ40 in the shop today and they have to remove the head to punch out a plug.

My ownership is about two weeks and I have replaced plugs, changed the oil, put new drums on the front brakes, adjusted the emergency brake cable, added a canasta to the top, changed ignition lock so the new keys don't fall out, added a lock to the backdoor.

My questions are should I do anything today while the head is off?

And, what other maintenance items are common and recurring and at what intervals with the BJ40?

I am in Costa Rica and cant get my hands on a service manual.

Thanks,

Gringo1

Inspect the head for cracks, as well the pre combustion cups for cracks.

inspect the rocker arms for wear where they gap is.

service manuals can be downloaded from www.birfield.com

why would you need to remove the head? turn the glow plug while GENTLY prying up and the plug will come out. i have come across many over the years that seem not to want to come out but after GENTLE pursuasion they come out in one piece.
cheers

Because the glow plug broke off even deep down and there was no way to get an angle on it to turn it and punching it through was not an option.

To the other poster, thanks, will look for those things to check.

Glow "Plug"

Thanks. I was thinking frost plug or somethning. Couldn't figure it out.
Crushers. I had a set come up with missing pieces once. It was a very old truck and if I loved it more I'd have pulled the head. As it was the remaining glowplug was so burned thin I just popped the new ones in and ran it, hoping the chunks would blow out the exhaust if they hadn't already.
