I have a 1981 BJ40 LC with the 1 B motor. The exhaust system is stock. I’m looking for recommendations / guidance whether increasing the diameter of the exhaust system is a good thing to do. I’m thinking that it may help the motor to breath better?

I highly doubt it (we are not exactly talking about a high performance engine). Try taking off the exhaust behind the downpipe and see if you notice any difference.

It'll just get lounder.

I measured the backpressure with a turbo piped into the stock exhaust system, and even then it was only being pushed to the limits at very high loads/revs. For a stock engine, the stock exhaust should do great.
