Me and my son are currently working on his 1979 Fj40 and are having wiring issues.
A little background:
We bought it a year or two ago and when purchased, it had had an under the dash electrical fire. The harness had completely melted and burned from where it enters the firewall on both the driver and passenger side. On a portion of harness on the drivers side, there was a part number tag. Missing from under the dash were any relays and the heater parts and box. The ECM was the only thing left but it was melted. The part number for that was still readable though.

Where we are currently at:
Read and learned tons here and I thank all of you guys for that. Read another thread and thought I would layout this later model harness in a similiar way. We wanted to put this thread together 1. to get some help and 2. to help others who have a late model harness and are having issues. Hopefully, this thread will turn out to be a good resource.

So heres the trouble im having:
  • All question marks on the list I have not been able to identify just yet. I do have schematics but for some reason cant figure these out.
  • In the area with the red lines, do wires from A and B (where the wire melted) match up with the three connectors (30,31,32)? Is there anything in between this area or do they just plug together. The left side being the dash harness and the right being the engine harness.
Any and all help will be greatly appreciated by us. Heres a beer for your troubles!:) Thank you in advance!!
Ps. I have larger size pix of every area, so just let me know if you need more detail in any area and I will attach a detailed pic of that area. Thanks!

I have a 79 harness that is hanging in my basement I can refer to. If you will send me the full size images of the collage and the ones that show the area for 30,31,32 and areas A and B, I will tell you what goes in between. Send to mbaker@globalsoftware-inc.com.

My apoligies: The harness I had that I though was a 1979 was actually a late 78 so would be worthless for this thread. I did recently acquire the engine compartment harness for a 79 so I do have that if someone has a question....

Isn't the 79 the same as the 80? Bought a wiring diagram for the 79/80 models from SOR years ago. It was also the reason I pulled the wiring harnesses from a 80 to have a spare for my 79. Anything that has painless or easy in the name of a replacement harness is anything but compared to factory harness.

I have a 79 that had a painless put in but I ripped it out. Have a 79 harness here I'm going to reinstall. I have a wiring diagram in the fsm but would love to have a big laminated version or something. Painless sucks!

3 looks like the connector for the wire that goes up through the dash and windshield frame and goes to the interior light on the driver side of the hardtop
