Hi All,

Just wanted to post my first thread on the site, mainly to thank all of you for maintaining such a great resource for new owners like me.

During a trip to Costa Rica in September 2011, I saw lots of 40 series Land Cruisers driving around, and so when I got home I set about trying to find and import one to my home in New Jersey. With the help of a local friend in Costa Rica and his mechanic, I found and purchased a clean 1978 BJ40 with 77k kms in January. The motor and drivetrain are in great shape, and it runs very smoothly, so no major work needed on the drivetrain.

The truck finally arrived at my home in NJ on March 24. Using all of the great threads and advice on this site (and after talking to many of the Cruiser parts suppliers), I collected a bunch of parts for the truck prior to its arrival. Six days after the truck arrived, I had the following upgrades already done: complete 2.5" OME suspension, wheels/tires/front locking hubs, headlights/fog lights, replacement (smaller diameter) steering wheel, Line-X through entire inside of tub, front bumper, glow plugs (took 3 weeks to get exact right plug from Toyota, and would not have happened without info from this forum), replacement seats (take-out bucket seats from my 1987 911; the seats have 16" sliders instead of 15", so I had custom mounts made and will post pictures in a separate thread), new stereo head unit, and tinted windows.

I've still got a list of 10-12 upgrades left to do, but its already looking pretty good. Title work was slowed because I had to wait for some of the paperwork from US Customs, but I will have the local title and registration in hand by the end of next week. Can't wait to get it on the road.

Thanks again to everyone who bothers to add technical info to this site. I would not have successfully purchased, imported or modified this truck without your help.

Beautiful!

Very nice looking Cruiser! My searches in CR for a Cruiser have only resulted in beat up, worn out, overpriced junk usually held together with bubble gum and bailing wire. Where in CR did you find it?

Thanks for the compliments.

I have a friend down there (retired from Texas) who knows a decent mechanic, and he has plenty of time on his hands to check out Cruisers. I happened to find this one online at a car dealership in the province of Cartago (my friend is in San Jose, and drove over to inspect it before having it sent to his mechanic for a PPI).

Many of the trucks in CR are rusted out and junk, but if you're patient its possible to find decent deals on BJ40s in good shape, "lightly" used, and relatively unmolested.

My truck was purchased new in 1978 for use on a plantation, and not titled for use on the road until 2007. That being said, I know the truck was repainted and "restored" about 6-12 months before I bought it (color on CR title listed as Orange, but Orange wasn't an available color in 1978 as far as I know).

The paint's pretty decent and the panels are very straight, but I have to believe the body has its fair share of bondo onboard.

that would be more less the same here in Panamá .. great looking 40 BTW ..

Nice one! I am also looking in CR for one. I found some on ebay and youtube from dieselcruiserimports.com has anyone dealt with them in the past? I live in IL. what is the process for title work? What does shipping cost to the states? I really like the idea of starting out with a diesel even though I plan on removing the B as soon as I find a suitable replacement.. I drive highway to work for the next 4 years then it'll be used around town and the desert in Az for the remainder of our lives...
Thanks!

I moved to Costa Rica last year. I bought a '80 BJ40 on my second visit here as a tourist, even before finding a place to live. It belonged to the late husband of a friend of a friend who had taken very good care of it. I'm wondering how much it would cost and how much hassle it would be to take it back to the US (Texas) with me should I ever decide to move back? I brought a vehicle to Costa Rica from the US and it was complicated, expensive and took a long time.

That is not a '79. It's a '78 or earlier.
The bezel is (flipped) round, if it's a '79 it should be square.
The fuel opening is missing a door, but it's vertical and thus '78 or earlier.
On a '79 and later that opening is horizontal.

BTW: Which Playa Hermosa? there are several.
