Ok, update on my recent purchase, a 1972 FJ40. Here is what it has currently:
Stock F engine, recently rebuilt, runs great.
2 day old rebuild on the 2 barrel carb (thanks for the help guys!)
2 day old Poly gas tank
~3" Superlift (gotta go, too stiff)
Stock 3 speed on the floor

Soooooo, I took her out for the first time wheeling. Some light stuff just to break her in nice. She is running 33" BFG AT's which make short work of the stocker friendly trail we typically run to break in the new vehicles.

Observations:

Too stiff! She won't flex at all, even going over some very easy rocks and humps. I knew this previously though due to my 230lb friend being unable to compress the rear suspension on one corner more than about 2" while jumping on the bumper. At least the bumper is strong!!! I was considering the Pinnacle Engineering 4" system. I keep hearing OME is great but man, $$$$. I guess you get what you pay for. Advice/opinions? HFS is also there and I guess it's in the same ballpark price wise. I'd rather do it right the first time, so tell me I'm an idiot if necessary!

Too fast! The 1st gear in low range is a little faster than my '01 Tacoma in 1st in low range. I did about an hour and a half of searching and reading posts on here last night and decided upon an SM420 conversion if I can find one. Opinions? She currently does 70 if necessary and I'm pretty happy with it. I don't even need to go faster since I have my Taco for that and my work is 10 minutes away all before 45mph even if I take her to work (which is mint, there is another FJ40 that our brewer owns, mostly stock, and one of the owners has a '70 Bronco). I want the crawl ratio but don't want to spend the $$$$$$ right now for a toy box. Since I have the '72 3 speed, what does that mean for parts? I have concluded from multiple posts that my shaft splines are going to mate up fine as they are, my 3 speed bellhousing is fine to use and I just need an adaptor plate and misc other things. More comments/advise? I have two extra tranny's and transfer cases, so I may use one of those to speed my swap when the time comes.

Axles! I have the coarse spline currently in the front, not sure in the rear. I have a spare set of axles with the fine spline that I want to switch out. I have to imagine changing the diffs, axle shafts and hubs are necessary. Lucky enough for me, I have a parts FJ with a disc brake conversion on it that has the fine spline axles. Only bad part is that it has auto-locking (or whatever they were in the day) hubs on it, as in there are no manual locking hubs, just bearing grease caps. I'd like to get lockers but first would rather swap out to the better axles so I can get the appropriate lockers for the fine spline. What sort of issues am I looking at here?

That's it for now! Thanks for any help you guys can give, this place is a great resource and you can say "poop" and "bum" without getting your ass reamed unlike Pirate!:D

Lift Springs will always be too stiff feeling IMO. I'm going SOA and hopefully ditching my skyjacker 4". SM420 is nice but SM465 is easier to find IIRC.

I already have the lift on the SUA and figured a decent lift that is more flexible would fit the bill nicely without having my rig apart for months (I'm not a very accomplished welder and am not $$$ enough to pay someone to do everything).

SM465...I heard that it is more $$$ intensive to fit one onto FJ40's? Also, isn't the SM420 lower geared in 1st?

Have a '74 FJ40...

Suspension is Rancho with RS9000 shocks. Decent ride compared to my '76 I sold with a SOR lift. Haven't been off road yet with the '74 so I can't comment on the flex yet but it has to be better than the SOR lift that would knock out fillings. SOA is nice with stock springs but FJ40s are tippy enough without raising the CG that much more with SOA, especially if you use the vehicle on road much...

As for the SM420, it is geared REAL low in 1st...Can't remember exact specs but it is like 7.05:1 or something like that. Great for rock crawling but all but useless for on road use I've found. I tend to use 2nd to start off and with 35's it is going to eat the clutch real fast. Also, it is pretty dang noisy and you lose some top end speed. I plan to change down the road and go with a 5-speed like the NV4500. I guess it comes down to what you plan to use the FJ for....Rock crawling and mostly off road go with the SM420...otherwise I search for other options! Try to find an FJ in your area with a SM420 so you can get first hand experience with it. That is a big change that you probably would like to get right the first time around.

Good luck with it all!

This is a vehicle that was purchased for the trails. I do need to keep it streetable but not something that needs to be fast, smooth quiet or easy to commute in. I am looking for the best situation for going REALLY slow on the rough obstacles that New England offers. It will never be a rock buggy, but I want to keep it very slow.

I have not seen much as far as NV4500 specs, perhaps I'll do a quick search to see what you guys are talking about.

What other options are there? I honestly do not mind the 3 speed, so the SM420 would be fine with me. 2nd gear starts is fine. I'm just worried that I will go through all this trouble to get the new tranny in and it won't be slow enough for me.

I'm not sure what is out there with a higher first ratio than a SM420 so if that is what you are looking for you should be good to go!! If you were closer, had an NV4500, I'd trade you...LOL

Personally I want something that is more streetable but still trail worthy that I can drive to the trails and around town. Although I haven't yet had a chance to try it out, in 4-low with the SM420 I imagine the FJ will creep over just about anything. But, with ARB lockers front and rear I think I am in overkill range for the type of 4-wheeling I do.

Here are a couple quick links I found for stare and compare:

SM420 http://earlycj5.com/tech/trans/SM420/sm420_swap.shtml

NV4500 http://www.high-impact.net/transmission_and_gear/nv4500.htm#NV4500: General Information:

Depending on the NV4500 you go with the first gear ratio is either 5.61 or 6.34 to 1. Close to the SM420 but you get a 5th gear as well. Of course the NV4500 is both bigger and heavier than the SM420 so it is all a trade off. Good luck with your choice and maybe you can find someone local with an SM420 to test drive. Or, if you're ever in the Denver CO area you can come drive mine...
