Hi everyone, I picked up a 1967 FJ40 about a month ago. From what I can tell it was originally beige (I see red primer underneath the beige paint), but now it is orange! It runs and drives and has just a few tiny rust spots. It has the original F engine and Drivetrain (Even the 3 on the tree). I was told that it was originally a California FJ and was taken to eastern Oregon (desert) so that is why it is mostly rust free.

I've already replaced the master and slave cylinders for the clutch and the brake master cylinder as they were leaking onto the drivers side floorboard. New drums and shoes on the rear and going to take the fronts when I have some more time.

Slowly but surely I am going to bring it back to being a good looking semi-daily driver. Even in it's current condition I get looks, everywhere I go.

The guy I bought it from used to restore these and sell them at Barrett Jackson auctions. He said he is done with that, since they aren't fetching the prices they used to, and included all the old extra parts he's collected over the years. I'll have to do some inventory and figure out what some of these parts are and what year FJs they fit.

One question I was wondering is if these are the original (50 year old) seat covers. I noticed most of the ones i've seen (aftermarket) aren't smooth like these. They all have thread lines on them (except for the rear). They are brownish red, so wondering if these are the original ox blood or something else. The fronts match the backs and they are starting to deteriorate.

Nice find, though maybe it's the orange that's turning so many heads!
I'm in the middle of restoring a '67. Your seats look much darker than mine, but they're both smooth- I can't guarantee mine are original. If you want a set of new SOR cushions and covers (black), PM me.
Have fun with that thing!

Way too original and mostly unmolested to resto-mod. Keep it original with only safety upgrades like brakes.

And please find a patch panel for the dash and chuck the radio.

Remember the five O’s of FJ40 ownership. They are:

Original
Original
Original
Original and
Original

:)

But seriously that thing is very complete. Keep it as original as possible.

Spend some time updating the lift gate springs. They still work fine, so not replacing them with hydraulic ones. A little sanding, primer, and paint.

I agree on the Orange screams 'look at me'. I'm going to take it back to Beige.
