16" wheels on my 40? (1 Viewer)

Any opinions on using these 16" wheels on my 40? The brake calipers don't rub, and they don't rub the fenders. Anything else to check? I don't think they look much different than the ones on my truck now.

Other than 16" tires being more expensive - shouldn't make much difference (as long as the backspacing is correct). They look good -

If they fit without rubbing, then theres nothing wrong with going with them, but then again, I don't see any advantage to them what so ever. 15" tires are cheaper, and available in far more styles and sizes. Unless you need to go to a larger rim due to larger brakes having been installed, I would stick with 15's. I personally would only go bigger if needed, such as to get certain tires not available to 15's or to shed weight from the wheel/tire combination. I'm keeping my 15's till the Mud Grappler's come out, then I'll go with the 18" rim required, which bothers me, but I'll get over it. 16's are for domestic full size pickups, 15's are universal!

well most 40,45,55,60,75 and some 80,105 cruisers came with 16x5.5 steelies as standard, its just that tyres for the 16 rims are more $ for the size.

All my cruisers have come with 16" rims. One set being 16X5.5 split rims and the other two being 16X6 steel.

Personally, I think there are more options with a 16" rim. Like running michelin XZLs. Or some funky metric sizes.

If all you want to run is 33,35 or 38 by 10.5 or 12.5 then go with 15" rims. If you like 8.25R16, 9.00R16, 11.00R16 or 255/85R16 then you will need to go to a 16" rim.

I have got 16 x 7 inch wheels on my 40 with 235/85/16 tyres
proberly go with a wider tyre on these rims next time though......Dazz

The 255/85-16 BFG Mud Terrain looks really good for a FJ40 at
33.3 inches high. Now that they don't make the 9.5x33-15 in
that series anymore, I see a real advantage in going to 16 inch
rims.

Would the 16" wheels from my '93 FZJ80 fit on my '72 FJ40? Haven't had time to check it out...

They will, the wheel itself covers the tie rod ends and does cover the caliper, etc, but the wheel sits too inward and the tires will rub. You will need spacers in order to run 'em.

I plan on 16" Toyota steelies on my 3FJ40 when completed, but these require spacers too.

I put them on, but at full turn the tie rods flexed just enough to make tie rod ends rub on the tire that was on the outside. Extra wheels from a wagon are getting the 34 LTB's tomorrow. No problems there. I do need an extra wheel from a wagon for a spare. I am going to post in the WTB section.

Okay, I've honestly been thinking of the same thing - going to 16" wheels. My concern is that a 15" rim needs a 3.5 b.s. I would like to get a 16" wheel big enough to handle the 275s that I have sitting in the garage that came off of my FZJ80. That would require a minimum of 16X7 rim, but the smallest backspacing that I have found is 4" b.s.

Does anyone have any expereince with 16X7 or X8 with 4 b.s. on their FJ40? I am thinking of either a black rockcrawler or white wagon wheel.

I did see you post and I apologize. I am very interested in the brand of the wheel to see if the manufacturer is available over here. I meant to email you offline to get your input, but I was also hoping that I would get some feed back from people who have swapped to 16" wheels here in the U.S. so that I could get a feel for what retail outlet they used.

So while you have 16x7 wheels, what backspacing do you have? The smallest b.s. on the 16" wheels that I've been able to find is 4". Will that be good enough?
