Sorry if this has been discussed before, I searched.
I was garage sale hopping today and picked up two BFG Mud terrains for free. The only problem, they are R15s. Being a broke high school student, I would really like to make these work some how. Can I buy some 15 inch rims that line up with the Land Cruiser lugs and make this work?

Curious as to what search words you used that didn't give you your answer?

Sorry dude, there was a thread a while back on what you have to do to your calipers to make a 15 inch rim fit and I wouldn't recommend it, very unsafe.

To aid your searching, used "Advanced" and limit your search to the 80-Section. For small keywords (e.g. 15") you will want to use 15* because this will pick up posts that have 15 inch in the text. I used Keywords=15* rims and picked up a number of relevant posts including this recent thread that should convince you to find 15" rims that fit without grinding or to move up to 16" rims.

ok. ill give my input. i currently have 15 in rims on my fzj only due to the fact that i have 1" spacers in back and 1/4" up front. no grinding calipers. just wide track width

Wow, how could I forget that thread... my bad. I remember everyone telling that guy that grinding them was a death wish. Hey e_parise, how do you like that setup?

Mine are 15", are they different in the states????

The 15 s fitted on the 91 model that you have. They have a smaller calliper

Umm...

So even if you make this work, you're gonna run two 15in. rims and two 16in rims??

:rolleyes::hillbilly::rolleyes:

I'm not that redneck. I obviously will pick up two more BFGs. right back at ya.

So, you're going to use two different 15" BFGs - one used, one new? Do a little more searching to find out what a bad and expensive idea it is to run tires with different diameters on a full time 4WD vehicle. I'd sell 'em in the paper. Really not enough information given here, but if these are the old BFG design and you put the newer style on even if they're new/new it's not a good idea. If they're used, then whatever BFG's you'll find to also install will not be the same dia.

Its got to be cheaper to just buy used 16" tires. Even if you found 4 matching 15s for free only to have to purchase wheels for them anyway.

On the other had maybe a set of steel 15" wheels would clear the caliper safely without any grinding. I think our friend earier was trying to make the stock '91 alloys clear.

they work fine for me. i just have a set of 4 bfg a/t's and im looking for some stock 16's and trying to sell the 15's with the 35 a/t's

The FJ60 OEM chrome rims fit on the '91 HDJ81 version of the 80 series with front and rear disk brake. I know because I ran them the whole winter with no trouble whatsoever.

Hope this helps!

Thanks for most of your input!

I decided to just give them to my jeeper friend as a birthday present. I'm going to get some Cooper Discoverers in the 33s or possibly bigger.

cries for help

I get a lot from this website and I am eternally grateful for its existence. That sed--I am curious why so many requests for help are shluffed off to the "use the search/ search the thread" pile. Is this a matter of server resources or what?? I'm sure EVERY issue conceivable at some time has been beaten to death and can be resourced by search, solving whatever problem. I hope there is technical reason behind this. Otherwise, I enjoy getting fresh input on old problems. I feel that newbies (like myself) should be encouraged to post and share...etc etc

Am I missing something???

No you aren't! I call that "Forum Fatigue". Can be seen everywhere, especially from advanced, high count posters who tire out after a while posting always the same answer.

Under such occurences I try not to say anything and not to be such a pain (I can be without that!) but it's not always possible to be nice given the little time and energy most of us have to devote on forums.

About the Cooper 33 inch tires - IIRC, you are planning on getting these in 16 inch rim size, so they would presumably be tall and and skinny? I'm having a hard time finding any selection of tall and skinny tires in that size for road use...

Actually, the 'Largest Canadian Tire' in Québec has NO tires on display in that size and offers only ONE 'Special Order' (=non returnable unless defective) 255/85R16 tire in their whole line up! I guess that's why the store is called 'Canadian Tire'

If you could direct me to a good place for tall and skinnies in Maine or New Hampshire, I'd love to hear about it!

Yes, you are missing a very important piece. The servers will handle repeated topics quite well. There are several issues as I see it and I'm one that has been around a long time and have participated in most of the in-depth discussions.

What you are missing is: "Interesting" threads (i.e. those that have not been beat to death) will get dozens of posts from dozens of 80-Series experts and even some bad information from highly opinionated sources. In the course of the discussion on a topic you will get people that take the time to post statistics, data sources, pictures, graphs, etc. This in-depth discussion is NOT going to happen every time someone asks about running 15" wheels on post '93 US spec 80-Series. It just ain't gonna happen folks.

So the quandry is.... do we let someone just get a yes/no answer and leave it? That happens a lot lately. IMHO, it is best to point the person to the prior discussion and they can come back to their thread with additional questions if needed. That is exactly what I did in my first post to this thread. TX_TLC essentially did the same thing; just a little harsher. FYI, that topic had been discussed just a few days ( <1mo) before the poster asked the question. To me, that shows that he had NOT done a search to find what answers yet he stated that he did. I'm sure that contributed to TX_TLC's attitude in his post.

Those with good memories that have been around awhile will generally point the OP to a good thread (again, as I did in my reply) and, hopefully will offer some search advice so the OP knows how to find information in the future.

HTH. And BTW, this "Why Search" thread comes up every couple of months. I would be happy to post a few links if you would like other's opinions on why repetitive topic posters are asked to search. Like I said above, even on the SEARCH topic, you won't get all the good responses 'cause the regulars are tired of justifying why people are asked to search and read on the topic... then ask more questions.

HTH.
