anyone know much about these axles? i know they have a 9.5" ring gear and use c-clip axles. the main question i have is do they have the same diameter pinion and the rear pinion support like on the FF? and are the axle shafts anywhere close in strength? how strong/thick are the housings?

The semi floater is not desirable, they similar weight and not nearly as strong as the FF. A friend had one in the back of his buggy and broke it often. I would wave off if you were considering using one.

just curious, what was he breaking on it? it seems like it would have to be stronger than a cruiser axle, bigger axle shafts and pinion diameter

i should have said to begin with that i have firm plans to get cucv axles along with different wheels in the future and this would be kind of a cheap temporary axle for me, if i could find one with the right gear ratio (4.10) i would weld the spiders, truss it, put brackets on it and peel out. i love the 14 bolt FF but i don't want to have to spend the $$$ on getting the hubs changed to 6 lug, and i don't want mismatched wheels either.

He broke shafts and gears and I think there was a blown up Detroit in there also, probably as a result of a broken shaft. When he was finally motivated he changed it out to a FF 14bolt and as far as I know never touched it again, he sold it a few years ago.

I don't think it is a worthy enough upgrade to go thru the effort of replacing your cruiser rear end. If you are planning on using a FF 14 bolt in the back, I would just get that under your truck the one time. I feel your pain on the mis-matched lugs / gears. You could get the special conversion hubs and sell them once your use with them is done. Or get two pairs of stock hubs and weld one set shut and redrill for 6 lug. Or just rock mismatched lugs and keep two spares on the trailer. It depends what you are doing with the front. Ideally you swap both axles at the same time, even though I doubt I will follow my own advice on this.

so how's that taco rear axle treating you?

just did a little more research on the 14 bolt sf, the 32 spline axle shafts are 1.370 in diameter, our 30 spline LC shafts are 1.31, that's slightly less that 1/16" larger....not very impressive, and not worth the trouble i agree

The taco rear end has been fine, I haven't broken it yet (knock on wood). I wheeled it for 2 seasons I think? Only with the old F. I'm generally mindful of it not being invisible (either of my axles) and try not to bind them up, but there have been lots of full throttle wheel spin climbs and ledges. We'll see how it does with the 2uz here shortly. The plan is to replace the taco rear next winter, hopefully. I may only be able to get the front axle done thou..

The 14-bolt SF and the 14-bolt FF are essentially different axles. Nothing interchanges between them.
