Looking at picking up a 1988 BJ74 from my friend. Pretty good shape overall and lightly built up. It's an Aussie rig so 12v, H55, split. I believe it lost the head gasket and one of the pistons got scored in the process. He has all the parts for it, new sleeves and pistons, bearings, got the head completely rebuilt and all parts and gaskets. Add oil/antifreeze and roll.

Everything is labeled and ready to basically be put back together. I've bought a cruiser from him in the past so I know his work.

My questions are:

#1 FSM? I see the links on the sticky thread, but none of those pages seem to work unless I'm doing something wrong.

#2 Is there a first assembly/startup process here or just all in the FSM?

#3 Any other items to check without going into that huge "while you're in there" whole thing. I've been down that route a few times. I want to fix anything that needs it or will be a pain, but I'm not looking to completely nut/bolt restore it.

if it's truly a BJ-74 then it would be 24V and it would have had the 13B-T. and, these are Japan market only, so if it is a BJ-74 that came from Australia then it was imported to Australia from Japan. I'm guessing it is a BJ-73.
if you are taking many parts off, then I would probably go ahead and change all the changeables, water hoses, belts, water pump, external oil hoses if any.

Sorry, that is incorrect. BJ74s were sold in Australia and they were 12 volt trucks.

Hello,

A few BJ74s were sold in select markets around the world and they were 12 V as well. Some were even LHD.

Another elusive 70 Series: 12 V LHD BJ74.

EDIT: I saw one of these beasts in late 2016. Sadly, I had no camera at hand. Interestingly, frame number started with JTE. According to the owner, it was a 1989.

I have not been able to find any documentation showing a BJ74 anyplace but Japan and Australia.

I did find a reference to a LHD BJ71 however.

Hello,

There is one. I could not believe my eyes the day I saw it.

I examined the unit so closely the owner -who was chilling out with friends nearby- thought I was a thief. I explained I had never seen one of those, it was a very rare Land Cruiser, and so on... He believed me, I narrowly escaped a beating. Then he allowed me to see the frame number. I wish I had it written down, I just remember JTE. LX grade, A/C, H4 button, cloth seats, gray finish on the panel.

Toyota may have built a few (10? 20?) just as it did with the PX10 back in the day.

JTE has nothing to do with engine designation.

Hello,

The 13B-T engine and a TURBO badge gave it away as a BJ74.

I expected a frame number starting with BJ74... but I found JTE instead.

I remember Canadian BJ70s had frame numbers that started with JTE. So did some European 70 Series. Can anybody confirm?

International VINs have a different format than VINs on JDM vehicles.
J = Japan
T= Toyota
The 3rd digit is a descriptor that varies by country. The 4th and 5th digits generally define the model.

Lots of good info here. Thanks for all that replied!

As far as I know it is an Aussie BJ74 LX, 12volt, RHD with turbo badge, 5spd and nothing swapped from a different model.

Where is a good place to get parts?
In the past I’ve used cruiser outfitters and of course mostly cruiserdan but it appears since I’ve been gone he isn’t in the parts business anymore.

Kurt is a great resource for 7x stuff. He stocks quite a bit of it.

bumping my own thread... for more questions.

Coolant - I'm assuming Toyota RED is still the go to?

Oil - I run Rotella T6 in my Jetta, and plain Rotella in my old Isuzu P'up Diesel and Kubota tractor. Any Mud-census on diesel oil?

Assembly oil/grease - I've used a few in the past, anything people like specifically?

Factory Service Manual - it appears the download link is bad, best place to buy one from since link is bad?

Quality green coolant is just fine. I run Valvoline Premium Blue in my 13BT.
