Looking at a 2013 LX570 base advertised for sale. I do not see BSM as an option and have researched model year differences and have not seen it listed. The salesman states that it does not have it. I assume they all came with BSM? How do you turn it on so I can walk through it with the salesman on the phone.

Thanks
Sean

it was not an option. It was offered starting 2016.
Interesting....This particular vehicle has parking assist with front and side monitor camera, turn signals in the mirrors and many other options but no BSM. Very surprised.

On a side note, my wife's 13 RX350 has BSM. Must have been an option for that vehicle.

Parking assist is just sensors in the bumpers and turning lines that come up in the rear camera display. This isn't an LS that will parallel park for you. The side and front monitor cameras are low-resolution cameras mostly for spotting objects in tight off-roading. If the curb is brightly painted you may be able to make it out on the screen.

If you are used to modern creature comforts such as 360 degree camera, BSM, or even carplay, that 13 LX will not have it. Many didn't even come with radar cruise, despite it being standard on 13 Landcruisers, if I remember correctly.

Thanks for the information. Starting my research on 200 series safety features as I am looking to upgrade from my 00LC.

So please correct me if I am wrong on any of these safety features on LX and LC,
  1. BSM came standard on 16+LX and LC. Was not offered as an option before 16 on either vehicle
  2. Lane departure is 16+ (only alert) LC and LX. Not available as option before
  3. Dynamic cruise is 16+ LC and LX. Standard on 13+LC. Option on LX 13+
  4. Pre collision system 16+ LC and LX. Option on LX13+ 13+LC standard
  5. RCTA (Rear cross traffic alert) 16+ Not available before 16
Since COVID it seems the traffic speed has increased dramatically around me. I do a lot of highway driving and have found BSM does have its place. Although it can be defeated if the sensors are dirty. I have also found that rain can affect them or if merging into traffic at the same speed as traffic they may not light up. As with anything they are just additional features to help, not to rely on all the time. I have no experience with the other newer safety features but have heard good things about the PCS and Kamikaze deer.

There is some level of PCS in radar-equipped 13-15 200s, though I don’t know much about how it works other than a couple instances over the years of seatbelts pretensioning and brake sensitivity being amped way up in situations where cars surprised me in traffic. People have also reported PCS errors on the dash when the antenna is dirty, obstructed, or disconnected.

I do believe the camera based system in 16+ is more comprehensive though.

This may be a poor mans BSM, but I find having a convex mirror more useful than an indicator and I have more context to work with. A large 3.75" one works great on the cruiser.

@TeCKis300 , Convex mirrors do have a purpose. I have used them for many years on both sides of multiple vehicles. I find them harder to use than I used to especially when it is raining outside or other inclement weather. I have found on a few occasions' cars sneaking up on me without their lights on. (Dark colored cars, low visibility) that are hard to see even with my convex mirrors. This is where Blind Spot Monitor really does shine IMO.

When my wife bought her RX350 I considered putting convex mirrors on because that is what I knew. She was not having it and after using BSM for a few years I do see it works quite well.

Thanks for the feedback.

Where is the old school turn your head left/right checking the blindspot? In my state, they still teach newbie in driving school and failed your driving exam if you miss this step.
