I am trying to cover all option in purchasing a new set of pistons for my 12HT. Perhaps after this exercise we will have a useful list and advice for anyone going down the same murky road.
What I do know:
OEM will be in very short supply and do not have the converted ALFIN inserts.
I can get a set of aftermarkets from Engines Australia at the push of a button
What I am not sure of:
Are there any reputable sources besides Engines Australia for these parts?
Do any manufactures sell directly?
Are there any “bad quality “pistons on the market which have the ALFIN inserts?
Please comment on the points above and selections below, and let’s see if we can build a one stop thread on the subject.
Suppliers:

1. Engines Australia:
Only available in 1st over size and complete with clips pin and rings.
Made in: ??
Quality- Believed to be good.
Web and support: Good
Anyone got a picture of the inside of these?

2. ACL
No web reference to these pistons, lots of performance and modern stuff no heavy diesel.
Or have I missed something again
Quality: believed to be good.
Alfin inserts: Yes
They do, or did exist because the picture below is one from my engine.

3. Nason:
Can’t register on their web site as a user, quick register search has never heard of 12HT pistons.
Funny this because Nason are mentioned more than once on this site.
Help!!!

4. Precision International
Available in their catalogue in std and 2 oversize’s
No bad reports
Seems like piston only and rings ordered separately.
Brand: Hypatec
Where are these made?
Quality: ?
Web and support seem OK.

4. ARCO
A Taiwanese company. One or two complaints from the VW City Golf set, but no information on Diesel pistons.
They do exist because a dealer here has a set but I have not inspected them yet.
Quality: ??
Alfin inserts: Yes according to the sales man on the phone
Comes with pin clips and rings I am told.
Web and support: iffy ?

5. No Name brand
The other 5 pistons in my engine are these. Identical to the ACL in all visual respects and weight.
The engine ingested something bad so I can’t really comment on the quality as they are badly scored.
Anyone have any clues on identifying them from the photo below.
Alfin inserts: Yes.
Quality: ??
Web support: ?

6. Other brands or companies supplying:

Well I hope the thread a bit of a knowledge base on these pistons and please feel free to add ring information as well.

Engines Australia have their parts made in Taiwan. We get a lot of Taiwanese parts and tools in oz and I have never seen anything bad, except for some engine mounts I bought about 30 years ago. I had to ream out the badly drilled bolt holes.
I was pre warned about the quality from the shop owner. But they were cheep cheep.
The owner of EA is a mechanical engineer. He designs the parts and has a Taiwanese factory manufacture them to his specs.

Hymm
These old engines are obviously less popular than I thought.
Thanks anyway, if there is any interest then follow the build on this forum called "Rollin my Own"

They maybe in SA but there is a high demand here for 12HT's

Cheers,
So, do Engines Austraila get all the business or are there other suppliers and / or choices of pistons.
Or are all the boys putting in used engines and praying a lot.
Hopefully all shall be revealed.

We did not get the HJ61 here as a regular model, but quite a few came in as special orders. No Coaster busses either, but Zimbabwe did get the Coaster so a few shops here keep spares. Toyota spares for the special import HJ's are long gone. The Coaster's 12HT is identical to the HJ, except for the top air pipes (which looks so Purdy). The bus only has the turbo out pipe, obviously their air filter sat on the left of the lump somewhere. I may even move the air filter to the left as there is a big fat hole here in most right-hand drive 60's.
Plenty of 2H's here, and yes, the 12 HT is also sought after here, probably with the same gusto if you factor in the demograph.

George

The 12ht cost around $5000 in OZ second hand so most would drop the engine in and pray they brought a good one. Australians love diesel engines and Toyota was fast to supply from the mid 70's so we have lots diesel cruisers getting around OZ obviously we have large aftermarket suppliers catering for most of the Hino diesel range.

So, my question is a few years premature then?
I'll hang in for an answer, but I hope I find some pistons first.

I see lots of different engine rebuilder sell 12HT pistons on their websites, but they never list the manufacturer. There are a number of reputable machine shops selling the same brand 12HT pistons though. Also, I found a cam manufacturer in northern NSW who makes aftermarket cams for the 12HT, http://www.waggottcams.com/

I would be interested to see how the pistons above go.

Its 696 on the spread sheet

Thanks for posting.

They list cams for basically all Toyota diesels. There's 2H, 12H-T, 1HZ, 1HD-FT, 1KZ, 3B-II (roller cam), 2L, 3L. There's one listed just as "Toyota Dyna" which I'd guess is early 3B.

There's also some other relevant ones, Isuzu 4BD1, Toyota 3F ect.

I would also be interested to hear peoples experiences with different brand 12H-T pistons.
