Just reached denver.. whew.. yesterday drove the 400+ miles from west Wyoming here... still towing (7560lbs gvw).. ran over 3 hours above 1100f & above EGT.. one stretch of 20 mins over 1200f topping out at 1256f... the actual max boost was around 13-14 psi.. never ran it past 3500 rpm.. averaged around 65mph or so...

Seems like a reasonable worst case pre-turbo EGT to me. Sure is handy having that AFR meter too!

Glad you sorted out your alternator issues and got back on the road.
 
While I was waiting for the new alternator to arrive I met some hard core diesel fanatics.. they told me max max max meltdown temps of 1500f EGT.. I dunno about that but I'm real comfortable at 1200f now... cant wait to unhitch the trailer & see how it performs with around 3000lbs less..... I'm guessing I'll be hard pressed to pass 1100f

I run my truck at 110-120 km/h at 300-350 C.
Post turbo egt.
The difference between pre and post is just 50 C .
To my memory, I recall some Australian company raccomanding max 550 C .
Pls consider the fatigue factor .
One this is to run at high egt temp for 1000 km .
Other is to run 400.000 km .

Depending on the particular turbo/tune/load etc., the pre to post turbo temperature differential can be far more than 50C. Some say it can be 150C or more. It's a dynamic figure.

That said, I do have both a pre and post turbo probe on my 2LTE. I see about 50C difference between the two under high load, but I don't totally trust the pre-turbo probe (cheap chinese)..... Personally I max out post turbo around 900-1000F under absolute worst case conditions towing up long hills in summer heat. My Chinese probe tells me this is about 1100F worst case pre turbo. What I can say is that it's much cooler than the motor was stock!!
 
Gents.. thanks for your replies... I also will be adding a 2nd egt sensor.. but I'm going to locate it at the exhaust end of my 3" super shorty exhaust ... the higher the delta "t" the less efficient my system is.. just gotta figure out how to take the 2nd Zietronix sensor reading & get it to my ems...
 
Ashamed to say.. but I haven't hooked up my new coolant sensor.. ugh.. but going old school never got above mid gauge on the oem.. that was one reason i kept pushing it harder.. kept waiting for high coolant temps... must be the "water wetter" stuff all the cruiserheads talk about... maybe the descaling/flush & pump rebuild when i did the timing belt??? Dunno..

Since you are wanting to "push" your 2LT-E, you are going to want to monitor all you can.

You aren't melting pistons at any particular set point, it's more of a heat soak and hot temps cause bad things.

1250 sustained is usually MAX what all the diesel people say, wether its Cummins, Ford, etc. However, that only tells part of the story. 1150 sustained is no problem at all.

The factory temp gauges are pretty useless. Once it creeps to hot you are probably WAY to hot. Without a reference point what is the mid-mark on YOUR temp gauge. Could be different from mine.

You have the intercooler which will help with intake temps.

I would also monitor your oil temps.

Sustaining high EGT usually means everything else gets hot. When you start pushing that engine you have to watch everything.

Are you running full water wetter or a mixture? If it's full water wetter make sure to swap that out for winter now that you are in Colorado. Refurbishing, flushing anything you can do to the cooling system is a great idea.
