12.5 gallons aux tank

I’m getting install 12.5 gallons aux tank in next week. The shop suggests me to put fabricate skid plates for the tank. Should I do it? And anything else need to do before installing the aux tank? Thank you
 
I'm contemplating a long range tank and curious to know if I should be thinking of upgrading the rear springs or suspension first to accommodate the extra weight when tanks are full and the cruiser is loaded up with gear? Anyone have any suggestions/experience on this? I've been keeping the suspension stock intentionally until things wear out (if ever) but now that I'm thinking of the long range tank, rear bumper/spare tire carrier relocation etc it might be time to pull the trigger.

What size are you looking at?

The 12.5 only adds the weight of the tank and ~80# of fuel, though it is behind the rear axle where it will have more impact than being centrally located. Not quite as much as hanging off the rear bumper, but a lot. Still, if for instance you remove the 3rd row you are roughly balancing out the weight gain.

The 40G however.. 240+ the weight of the tank, and you must move your spare to the rear bumper where it has a bigger impact on vehicle dynamics.

So the capacity of the tank matters a lot to what rear spring you'd run.

I just started a thread on this.

If you are 100% stock I am not sure because I am currently running the Bilstein 6112 kit including rear springs and shocks.

With only the tank full and no additional load, it is fine. But with the tank, passengers in the 3rd row, and any substantial gear weight I see mine squatting pretty bad and the driving characteristics are not ideal.

I am currently waiting on helper bags from Airbag Man to ship. I think this will allow me to tune the rear end to match the additional load when needed, but not have to live with heavy springs all the time. Will report back when installed!
