I’m getting install 12.5 gallons aux tank in next week. The shop suggests me to put fabricate skid plates for the tank. Should I do it? And anything else need to do before installing the aux tank? Thank you

If you're installing on a LC200:Gas tank is up against frame and spare tire covers the tank, so no need for skid plate.

Hi, how much they charged you for adding new tank?
Roughly what is total cost of the project?
I am looking to add one - depending on the cost.
Thanks

The tank size 40, 24 or 12.5 gallon is same price $2,395. And $1,050 for install
Am I the only one who is confused why the tanks cost the same? I'd think the larger the tank, the more expensive it'd be...

The material costs differences are minimal. The main cost is in the labor for fabrication and welding.

You would think. But, I'm sure Long Range America has quite a bit of money going into freight. So, maybe just more cost effective to ship a bunch of them and price all the same. I know in Australia, depending on the dealer, the LRA tanks are usually priced a bit different based on size. But, it's minimal as @TheIcemanCometh mentioned.

Also, prices have gone WAY up. When I did mine 3 1/2 years ago, it was less than $1500 shipped and I hesitated at that price. I'm sure increases are mostly due to freight, logistics, supply constraints, etc. that all industries are seeing. But, in Australia, they don't seem to have gone up as much. Granted, the Long Range America price of $2545 per tank includes crating/freight and that's a big number these days. But, it's a big investment. Especially since they use cheap fittings, tubing, and pump. You'll find many here tend to upgrade the pump, fittings, tubing, filter, etc. because the components that come with the tank are pretty cheap. I had the small pump fail twice and ended up pulling the tank and upgrading to a larger/faster/quieter pump and upgrading all tubing/fittings. Pretty disappointing they don't include better components given the $2545 price tag.

Could you share what did you upgrade to?

There's a few different varieties (brand names), but what most are doing is something like the pump linked below (two examples). Just go off the E16048 part number. I remember maybe seeing posts in the past that Long Range America made some upgrades on their pumps (since I installed). Not sure about that. Maybe post pictures of what you have. If so, that's good as the previous one (like this) was junk.

I've always felt the same way.. even at the old pricing the quality of the components other than the tank was piss poor. Let alone all the issues people have with evap codes and fumes.

I truly wish there were some competition in this space to force LRA to up their game. I gather that they are good people, but the demand for this product is outstripping the supply of quality parts here and disincentivizing improvement.

Search on this forum; IIRC, @Eric Sarjeant mentioned somewhere that his outfit in IN built an upgraded fitting / pump kit. It may have been in a video, not sure. Might be worth contacting him directly.

I also agree with some of the previous sentiment regarding the price point of these tanks. Seems like a near $3k upgrade would come turnkey with the best fittings and pump on the market.

Definitely wish there were more alternatives. There are in foreign markets (Brown Davis, Long Ranger, ARB, Gerber, etc.) as they don't have to work around the charcoal canister like us.

I ended up getting rid of my 2016 that had the 12.5 gallon (now have a 2018 with no auxiliary). But, the 12.5 seems to be the one with the most issues as it's really tight to the body.

I haven't tracked this discussion for long.. to your knowledge has anyone looked at using one of those brands and relocating the CC? @grinchy had to do so when he installed the factory Aux tank so there is some precedent. I'm about 20% keeping an eye out for the stuff to copy what he did.. not super high priority for me, but I really like the idea of factory toyota quality on this stuff.

I contacted Eric Sarjeant about providing me the upgrade kit which included fuel pump fittings and fireproof hoses. He said they come from the Parker company, but he didn't have the part numbers at hand then. Due to the fact that he only had as many upgrade kits as tanks he could not sell me the kit. He quoted me a price of $1,400 for for only the upgrade kit. I didn't pursue it with him after hearing the price of the upgrade kit.

I think @grinchy is the only one to take that plunge. I would think those other auxiliary tanks would work if you are willing to relocate canister like grinchy. Just a bit more involved.

Yeah, that's a crazy price. See if the folks at Slee would be willing to sell you a kit. I know they use it on all their LRA installs and their price is under that WITH installation. So, maybe they can sell you kit or just tell you what they use.
