It’s always been wild to me that @aaronrules wouldn’t hesitate to wrench on a jet engine but won’t touch the front end of a 100 because he’s afraid he’ll mess it up!!! o_O

I'm in AF maintenance on the civ side.. I ain't impressed with most of the work I see

I've been cheating, and looking through the schedule/trail options from last year @ 100s in the Hills Schedule for HIH 9

Looking at the 2019 schedule, I see:

The original trails seemed to be:
Alpine Loop
Black Bear to Last Dollar Highway
Black Bear to Ophir Pass
Black Bear to Teluride
California to Corkscrew
Clear Lake and Mineral
Clear Lake to Super Secret
The Gulches
Imogene to Last Dollar
Imogene to Ophir
Ophir to Alta Lakes
Ophir to Telluride
Poughkeepsie Gulch
Poughkeepsie Gulch to Corkscrew (w/ or w/o bypass)
Stony Pass
Yankee Boy and Governors Basin
the alternates, I assume due to weather/trail conditions, seemed to be:
Eureka Mine
Immogene to Exlpore
Imogene and Yankee Basin
Mineral, California to Corkscrew
Ophir to Alta Lakes
Ophir to Last Dollar
Ouray to Imogene
Stony Pass to Kite Lake

I'm familiar with Black Bear, and Poughkeepsie Gulch, only by reputation, and have read through the trail descriptions, both on the schedule and from some j**p trail sites.

As a HIH neophyte, I'm curious if any previous HIH attendees, or people familiar with the area would be willing to share their input, on their favorites trails, and why they are their favorites?

They’re all Favorites! You cant go wrong with any of the trail choices; what ever you get in on you’ll have a memorable time. The backside of Black Bear can be a mind game for newbs. As a HIH first timer you’ll want to be sure to take in the Alpine Loop which encompasses top of Colorado views from several perspectives. Alpine loop is prob. the longest trail day but well worth the time.

Strongly recommend doing Black Bear - the support and guides at HIH are world class. You'll never have a chance to do that trail under more experienced trail leaders than at HIH. It's actually pretty mild, though it doesn't always feel like that, and the sense of accomplishment when you're done is incredible. Very scenic ride, too.

Other favorites of ours from the last 2 years:
-Clear Lake to Super Secret - beautiful scenery. The lake is a great spot for a break. Bring your fishing rod and catch (and release) some trout.
-The views on Last Dollar are incredible. Highly recommend Last Dollar as an easy, scenic run.
-Stony Pass is full of great views and high alpine meadows. A few fun water crossings on this run.
-California to Corkscrew takes you through a ghost town and provides big views. Corkscrew is a pretty fun run and can get interesting if it gets wet :)

The whole area is insanely beautiful - there are no bad choices for trail runs at HIH.

Wife and I (both healthcare workers) regrettably have cancelled our tickets as of this morning. Quite honestly you don't want us dragging anything from our workplaces to what should be a happy care free time. We couldn't forgive ourselves if one of you or worse one of your kids got seriously ill and we were the vector for that infection transmission. Its just not worth the risk. Its a depressing morning in comparison to the elation of obtaining a golden ticket, but its the best right decision we can make. Good news though somebody n the wait list should be getting an awesome email this morning!

We hope you guys have a fantastic and safe event and we hope to meet you all in the future

This right there is another example of sacrifices made by a few heroes for the larger good! Thank you for your service - we don't appreciate you enough.

I would not miss Black Bear or Imogene. Those are my two favorites!

Ditto. Imogene is a 100% absolute must in this area. We ran it 3+ times last year on the ouray side with all the closures, never got tired of it.

Because of this thread I watched the Smithsonian documentary about the state of Colorado. Now it’s on my bucket list to drive up there.

I’ve been on both military and civilian side, deployed and at home and I disagree with you. There some out liars but for the most part, the best and smartest people I have ever met came from aircraft maintenance.

bad news for the fj summit
The FJ Summit is about gathering with friends and family in beautiful Ouray, CO. We waited with optimism as long as possible but given the current situation and complexities of permits, insurance, gatherings, meals, restricted trail rides and the safety & wellbeing of our participants and the community of Ouray, after careful consideration we are cancelling the 2020 FJ Summit.

We want to assure you that over the next few weeks we will issue a full refund to everyone who has registered for this year’s event. That means all registrations and all pre-sales of swag will also be refunded.

The official dates for the 2021 FJ Summit will be July 21-25, 2021.
Some good news...We will hold your slot 2021!
Additionally, we will make our yearly donations to the local community in Ouray. We are pleased to announce that our two scholarship recipients have been chosen for this year, and we will be announcing their names in the coming weeks.
We hope your family and friends are staying healthy during these challenging times and we can’t wait to see you next July! Stay tuned to your email, and should you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to reach out.
Warmest Regards,
Directors of The FJ Summit

bad news for the fj summit

Uh Oh....
Weren't they scheduled for something like the week before HIH, and in the same general location?

That's sad. This whole deal is insane.

I would guess that the organizers found it difficult (impossible maybe) to get insurance for the event based on the current situation.
FJ Summit is a lot bigger than HIH.

something like 3x as big and over in Ouray.

I trust that the HIH leadership will make the right decision based on all factors available when it is time to make the call and I'll support the decision 100%. Hopefully that call wont have to be made for a little while longer to let everything shake out.

Yes, same general location on the same trails. But FJ Summit is many times larger than HIH.

bad news for the fj summit

That is going to HURT the local economy something fierce. Hopefully the State of Colorado has provisions in place to compensate local businesses. Here in Austin, we've already lost several major local restaurants that were skating on thin ice already (rents are MEGA here now).

Whatever is decided for HIH, I'll support though. Fingers crossed it can still happen.

I think you can mountain bike it, but it would one heck of a ride. Would want to check to make sure it's "allowable" though.

During HIH8 we ran Black Bear, I got out at the power station (gated) and rode Bridal Veil trail to the end and descended Blixt Trail to Ophir Pass Road, up and over to Silverton. Rainbow trail goes along Million Dollar into town. Storms rolling in made it interesting as you get to 13,000'+ before descending. I'd do it again if anybody wants to join during HIHX.

Yes, same general location on the same trails. But FJ Summit is many times larger than HIH.

They were expecting 334 vehicles / 609 people this year, according to their website. So 3x vehicles, 2-2.5x headcount.
