There is plenty of room at the lodge to disperse camping a lot more than what we have done in the past if it comes to something like that. We can adjust all the activities around the lodge to comply with any rules. And aren’t all the trails county roads? Wouldn’t that mean once we are on the trail and in groups of less than 25 mostly we wouldn’t be needing abide by whatever gathering rules are in place? It would be a lot easier to scatter the participants of HIH to comply with any kind of state guidelines with regards to large crowds.

Plus it’s a voluntary event. If someone doesn’t think they should come for whatever reason, then they don’t have to.

Hmmmm almost like everything should be that way, good point lee.

something like 3x as big and over in Ouray.

I trust that the HIH leadership will make the right decision based on all factors available when it is time to make the call and I'll support the decision 100%. Hopefully that call wont have to be made for a little while longer to let everything shake out.
Same here. HIH organizers are smart guys and dedicated to this event. No mater what the decision (go or no-go), you've got my support. I realize it's a little easier for me to say this considering I've been 5 times and live only a few hundred miles south of the area. But, I suspect most attendees would have the same opinion.

HIH is a considerate, mindful group of people and I think folks will practice some common sense, follow established guidelines, and the gathering could be managed safely.

Only complication with this is if trail leaders decide to stay home. Then the folks who do show up might have to step up.

HIHX UPDATE:

Chris and I have always tried to be as transparent as possible with everything HIH. We decided a few weeks ago that June 1st would be our decision day. That's two weeks away and as of today, Colorado is still very restricted. Businesses are opening, but VERY limited. Businesses that opened but did not adhere to the super strict rules were immediately closed by order of the health department. Many counties are under different regulations and Governor Polis declared a restriction that we are not allowed to recreate more than 10-miles from home. The likelihood of us being able to put 300 people together in July is slim, but we have not lost all hope. However, Sheriff Conrad has been issuing tickets to any non-locals in San Juan county. He isn't playing with the "10-miles from home" rule. This is obviously causing some heated debates between locals and visitors. We're fortunate to have such good relationships with the decision makers of San Juan County that they invite us to board meetings and feed us inside info as soon as they get it. That's how big of an impact HIH has made on that county. That is a reflection of all the HIH attendees over the years. We're their favorite group and we hear that often.

Silverton wants us there. In fact, they NEED us there. They've been hit with fires and avalanches for the past two years and many businesses may not make it without HIH and Hard Rock 100 (running race). The Durango-Silverton train is not allowed to run and may not run at all this year. I spoke with DeAnne Gallegos yesterday and she said many businesses will not make it even if we have HIH. The lack of tourism has already put them under. She has already made the difficult decision to close her shop (The Chocolate Dog) in hopes of reopening next year.

Regardless of where you stand politically or what your opinion is of this pandemic, we will abide by state and local orders and nothing else. If we do have to cancel and your plan is to still come to Colorado, be sure to check all local restrictions. The San Juan County sheriffs department isn't playing around. Most trails in SJ County have signs and barricades up. Up until just a few days ago, Greene St in Silverton was closed to everyone but residents. If you ignore the signs and drive into town, they're gonna issue a ticket. If you're traveling from another state, it'll be pretty obvious that you're more than 10-miles from home. Locals can't even camp in many areas of the state right now.

June 1st is still the date, but the reality is that it doesn't look good as of today. We still have our permits, our event insurance is still active, we have the location, most Silverton businesses want us there, but we still need approval from the state and the county to gather 300+ people, and how likely is that with the event just 60 days away? It is what it is. Stick with us. If we're able to hold the event, there will undoubtedly be some changes and restrictions. Understand that we are only hosting the event if we can do it legally, safely and at capacity.

Fingers crossed. Stay healthy and safe. We hope to see you in Silverton. Colorado Travel & COVID-19 | Colorado.com

Great info Stan! Thanks for the update and thanks to all the HIH leaders for being vigilant during these times. You definitely have my, as well as many others, support for whatever decision that is made for the event this year.

Also appreciate the heads up on the 10 mile rule. Didn’t pick up on that previously if it was mentioned here and certainly is an important piece of information for making decisions about upcoming travel.

Thanks Stan for the update. We all understand its not in your control, and any frustration is not directed at you, but at the situation in general.

do a quick google search on Sheriff Conrad in Silverton. he has been quite the polarizing character during this pandemic. as Stan mentioned, he is not playing around in regards to upholding the Governor's restrictions.

we are really hopeful, but it is a tempered hope now that we are seeing some of the realities as we ease out of lockdown. thanks guys.

Thanks Chris. I’m keeping all of my fingers and toes crossed....

I honestly hope that CO will do something to help the communities that are going to be wrecked after the last three years. Colorado is more than Telliride, Aspen and the other affluent ski communities.

This is what we’re up against.

Well, they will likely bankrupt the state unfortunately (certainly numerous counties such as San Juan, Hinsdale and more). Hopefully they have a plan to support all the small business owners and towns that rely on outside influx of revenue for their very survival. I don't see how Silverton survives after the now potential triple whammy (massive fires in 2018, apocalyptic snows in 2019 and now a pandemic in 2020) that have cut tourism dollars dramatically (potentially entirely this year). I've donated where and when I could, but that won't be enough. I've placed a few online orders from small business in Colorado to provide at least some level of support for them, but it's definitely not enough.

I completely trust you guys to make the right call and know full well the absolute last thing y'all would ever want is to cancel HIH. Fingers crossed a miracle happens and we can all meet up again. I don't want to think about a summer where I don't get to meet up with all the great folk at HIH. But, if it has to get postponed to 2021, then I'll be right there ready to sign up the moment the floodgates open :)

It's too early to ask this, but if HIHX gets postponed until 2021, what is the plan? I know you mentioned refunds at one point minus some fees. Will our spots carry over to next year or will we need to run the gauntlet again? Can you keep the registration fee and carry over our spot?

That was going to be my suggestion. I don't "need" the money back. If they held it for next year (in an interest bearing account...hint, hint), I'd be super pumped about it. Heck, I'd be fine if they charged me some fees next year to cover those expenses.

I am in Denver and I am flexible on when I can go to the San Juans. I am not 100% sure that I will make it there this year. All bets are off if cases begin to rise again. Who knows...

Hell, you cannot even camp in Moab right now. So technically you can go to Moab, but you cannot camp.

Here's a little video I put together from some of our HIH9 videos:
