So who's done the trail (Co. Rd 20?) that is right out of camp that parallels the river then cuts up and in behind Kendal Mtn? Ive been part way then turned around. The road splits and terminates at Titusville Mine the other fork goes to Montana mine-? Anything good up there to check out?

Also curious about Co. Rd 33
My map shows Titusville Mine off Co Rd 33.
For places nearby to explore would recommend Co Rd 52 it forks on right side as you get to Mayflower Mill on Co Rd 2. Some ruins of amazing aerial tramways as you go up Arrasta Creek. Some interesting mine ruins at ends of two main forks.

Titusville Mine is off the East Branch near the top of Kendall Peak (33). The peak itself is the West Branch where you can see the ruins of the Kendall Group Mine. Both of these pics were taken at the split near the top of 33. In the first photo, you can see the East Branch rising up and around the bend. A little further up and you'd reach the tailings of Titusville Mine. The second photo is looking back west with the main 33 running down to the left and the West Branch rising straight ahead with the SXS coming down. Kendall Group Mine is to my truck's immediate right....just out of frame. It's just a BIG hole in the rock face with an iron cage welded over the entrance.

Arrastra Gulch is really amazing. You can climb it all the way up into Little Giant Basin. It's got some narrow shelf road that leads to a stunning high alpine lake and really cool mine ruins like Big Giant. They don't actively clear that road at the higher altitudes and just let it clear naturally. Last summer, it wasn't passable at all after the first mile.

@geanes - your local area knowledge is excellent. I think we'll be in town early enough on Wednesday to make a run up there. Lets stay in touch.

Stop it with those views, you're killing me!

I will be rolling into Silverton Monday evening hoping to do some early exploring. If anyone else is around and planning on doing anything hit me up.

I’m probably gonna want in on this too! :steer:

We'll be in the area- just not Silverton till Wed's. I think we'll try to meander into Silveton the back way from Creede or Lake City depending on when we can get out of ATL. Camping a night or two on the way in.

Our current plans have us arriving in Silverton sometime Tuesday (7/21) afternoon. We'd love to meet up with any other earlybirds, and could make some adjustments to arrive earlier, if some informal/unofficial fun was to be organized.

Are you guys just driving through Silverton? I thought the trails are still snow covered this time of year.

I'm planning on rolling into Silverton on Tuesday 7/21. I'll be coming from Salida via a backcountry route I did last year. Will be camped above Salida and running trails and passes up there from Friday 7/17-Tuesday 7/21. It takes about 4-5 hours to get to Silverton (dragging a trailer over Cinnamon takes some time). I'll probably do what my dad and I did last year which was to get a hotel room that night in Silverton (nice break between 5 consecutive nights camping on either side). Could easily run some trails Tuesday afternoon/evening and then some more on Wednesday morning (maybe a quick run up Clear Lake?), setup camp at the opening bell around noon and then run up Kendall Wednesday afternoon.

As always, anyone who wants to join me is welcome. If anyone wants to camp in Salida and caravan down to Silverton via the backcountry gravel route I've mapped, they're welcome to join as well.

Here are some pics of my favorite camping spot above Salida with a couple from the backcountry route that crosses over Los Pinos Pass (saw 1 other vehicle in over 80 miles of gravel) and a final shot of us crossing over Cinnamon with all the snowpack still going strong last July.

We are all planning on making it the Durango/Silverton area on Sunday the 19th, but can go elsewhere to meet up for camping and exploring. If everything goes according to plan, we will be towing a camper. Something I’m not sure how it will hold up to on any real trails. I wonder if there is a way of compiling the info of who will be where early? Then come up with a means of communication for meet ups?

That would be a GREAT idea. Include cell #s and HAM IDs (if they have them). Might need to create a sub-group with all the registrants Mud handles?

This will be our first time heading out. I am a rookie with this. Does anyone have a list of essentials that should be brought along?

DON’T FORGET THE 100 :steer:

1. Rain coat.
2. Backup rain coat.
:)

Seriously it will rain. Make sure you and your camping gear/tent are rain proof.

It will be cool morning/evening and warm during the day. Layers are key.

Past that it’s all gravy. Bring normal camping stuff. And plenty of food and water. There is a store in town that has basics also.

Good tires and brakes on the 100 and you are all set.

@ntsaint has you pretty much covered with his advice. I would add that, since you appear to coming from Illinois, make sure you change your oil and filter before departing (I do every year before heading out as it's a 2000 mile round trip for my plus all the additional driving I do while up there which adds up to around 3000 total miles). If your diff fluids are due to be drained and refilled, do them before departing (super easy DIY just like the oil change). Bring plenty of headlamps and batteries (if the headlamps aren't rechargeable) as the campgrounds are dark at night (assuming you're camping on site and not renting a room somewhere in town).

The other things you need to bring are as Lee suggested, your 100 :) ,a big smile and some local beer from your neck of the woods to share :)

If anyone wants to meet up with me in Salida the weekend before HIHX, they are welcome to join. My major goal this summer is to drive up and summit Mt Antero. It's the HIGHEST off-road elevation you can achieve in North America at 13,800 feet. It's a 400ft vertical hike from the end of the trail to summit the 11th highest peak in CO. Here's an excellent video I found which was done last year. Sit back and enjoy....it's INCREDIBLE!
