I found a Warn 10,000# winch at a garage sale in my nieghborhood that is about 10 years old but hardly ever used. Very nice condition, remote control. Talked the guy down to $475, then picked it up and set it on the front of my 40 and told him..uhhh....I'll think about it and call you back. The thing is freakin huge! Anyone else using a 10K on a 40? I keep seeing old 8274's going on Ebay for $350-$450, maybe I'll just wait for one of those. Its a very nice winch, but HUGE!!!!! i would have to build a plate that would put it up above my saginaw box which would block a bunch of my grill!

M10000 bit of a rare bird. It's the big frame that became the M12000. The Fj60 ARB bumper is made to fit this specific winch. The big planetary whiches can be hard to fit if you have the standard (frame horn) Saginaw conversion. I'm sure you could get it on a 40, but the 8274 when mounted looks like it belongs. I'd hold out for that, but working 8274s are rarely under $500, and if you see one, you should jump on it.

I had one on my 40. worked great, it is now on a buddies 40.

Cheap enough, get it..

I think I'll call him back. If he still has it I think I'll pick it up. I'll have to make a plate that will allow my ps box to be removable. hell, I guess it drops out the bottom so that really shouldn't be that big of a deal. Might be kinda fun watching everyone else try to winch someone out then pulling up with the big 10K on the 40 and gettin the job done........

You could always use it as a receiver mounted winch. You could swap it front and back and not have to worry about your steering box.
Not if you enjoy your back.. those winches are HEAVY sumsabitches..

integrate it into a top plate and a front bumper. It will be plenty strong.

Yeah ditto. For the right price get a M10000
I had a M8000 on the 80 and it did great. Got me unstuck and self righted me when I rolled no prob. If your ever using it that hard use a snatch block to lighted the load. My 74 is about the same wieght as a built 40, and 10000 would be good for it. Having a little to much power on a winch is rarely an issue.

On the other hand a 8274 is a legend. About the same wieght I would think as a M10000. It's still being built (incase you ever need any parts. But getting parts for a M10000 should be no problem), it pulls fast, has LOTS of cable which is nice, excellent braking, and good tourque too.

If both where infront of me, I woud take a 8274, unless you need a low mount winch. But seeing as that one is right there, I might be tempted to go for it.

Cheers,
N.

I agree about rather having an 8274, but I'm telling you this winch is perfect. The guy was a deer hunter and had a stock full size pickup that only went offroad for hunting. He said he only used it once or twice and the truck was in the garage everynight. he even greased the nipple where the remote plugs in so it didn't corode. I guess he works for the local power company and they have winches on the front of all the company trucks so he always puts one on his personal trucks. He has all the original papers cables fairhead, and the box. He just traded off his 97 or 98 pickup for a new one and put a new 9000i on it since it fit inside some bumper he bought for it and the 10K wouldn't.

And yea, making it a reciever mounted hitch wouldn't work too well for me. i'm 5'10" and about 170lbs, and I aint pickin that fuc&ing thing up by myself!! I'm not saying I couldn't, I'm just saying I wouldn't. (and I'm not real sure I coudl)
