Does the 100 series share chassis/driveline components with the V8 Sequoia/Tundra/4runner?

For the most part no.

I think the engine might be shared, different versions probably but both are 4.7L Lexus-bred V8's. I can't imagine the non-LC ones getting the high-end tranny the LC gets (5sp auto), but I guess that is a possibility. The rearend in the Tundra up till now has been the same as the Tacoma, only wider, but same 3rd member (8"?), I would guess that's what the Sequoia got also, not sure on the new 4Runner, but I would not expect Toyota to put in a LC rearend when I'm sure the Tundra-ish ones are cheaper, and more than up to the task.

Not sure on the front suspension, I know the older 4runners/Tundras were definetly not like the Cruiser, but haven't looked closely at a new 4runner, but my guess is they would be like the Sequoia, which is not like the LC, similar, heck all Toyota vehicles are 'similar', but the LC just always seems to be built better/stronger/smarter than the cheaper Toyota vehicles.

Yes, engine is same (different top end). Heck, the tranny on the new Tacoma is even the A750F (100 tranny). The guts/underpinnings are all far lesser grade than the 100 though.

The truck is half a tonne lighter than the 100, so lighter duty running gear is an easy option over the extra heavy 100, and my 90 series prado [tacoma size diffs and coil front end] has more clearance with 285's under it, than the 100 has on 36" tyres.

The seq, tundra and tacoma all seem to share the same running gear in the front and back, and similar front end set ups, with coils springs, instead of torsion bars, which offer more travel than the 100 series set up.

The Lexus GX 470 shares 100 size cv joints, has a larger front diff, but runs the same rear diff as the 3 above, in a stronger housing, but coil suspension rear, compared to tundra/tacoma.

In manual versions, the tacoma, tundra, 100, 105 share the same gear box, but the 100 and 105 dont run the hilux style transfer case.

Without pulling them apart, this is my observation, and compares with our 90/120[gx470] series and 100/105 series, and hilux equipment.

sadly, the V8 in the Sequoia etc is more powerful and torquey than the 100's though IIRC...

I was attempting to avoid the painful part by part similarities and differences SupraTurd but since everyone else has chimed in. Remember while some are inferring that there are more similar parts than one might imagine, the vehicles are more than the sum of their parts once they hit the trail or road.

When looking at the chassis and driveline remember that the Tacoma is the only vehicle that can run all of the trails a 100 can. The downfall I (personal opinion ONLY) have with the Tacoma is you gotta jack 'em up to even get 33's underneath. You gotta jack 'em up to the moon if you want to even look at 35's. The 100 does this while giving a smooth as glass ride on-road that none of the other Yotas can touch. I've owned a 100, Taco, 4Runner and a Tundra, also test drove the Sequoia before settling on the 100 and the 100 is the total package.

shed guy: What is a 90 series Prado compare to in the US market, 4Runner? My tacoma would rip the wheel wells out with 285's on it and doesn't have the ground clearance that my 100 has.

odd that the Tundra got more power for 2005 but the 100 did not.

Yes, I'd like the added power, though I'm glad I don't have that VVTI head on my 100.

Reliability and driveability of variable valve timing. The power delivery is not as smooth througout the revs. On a sports car, bring it on. On a Cruiser, no thanks! Now gimme 282HP without VVTI? YEZZZER!

the 100 will get that extra power about middle of the 2005 model year, the GX 470 got it for 2005, but it wasn't introduced until late December

Yes..the GX. Good thing they didn't add it to the LX.

In the USA the V8 SE 4runner is a mechanical clone of the GX470 and it has the same engine/transmission that is in the LX/LC same HP/Torque for the 2003/2004 model year (all these engines/transmissions are made in the same factory). It's faster than all the above since it weighs 4500 lbs compared to 4800 lbs on the GX and 5500 lbs+ on the LC/LX. Plus the 4runner/GX are both made in the highest tech/highest quality rated Toyota plant in the world. Just the facts :)

A 90 series is the previous model to your gx470, which is our 120 series, but we dont get the V8 version.

We got the 90 with the 3.4 V6 or the 3.0 tdi making 96kw and 346nm, witht eh 100 gearbox, and 100 brakes, but weighing 1860kg.

Now with a smaller rear diff, and better front x member clearance standard, the tacoma definately has better clearance underneath than the 100, and the 285's fitted after a 14lb hammer, some trimming, a 70mm lift, and some chains on the mudflaps to stop them getting dragged by the wheels.

Below is my 90 series turbo diesel with 285's

This one is a friends 120 series [gx470] which i have fitted a 80mm lift, 16" wheels, 34x10.5 ltb swampers arb bar.

Darren you could kick any 100 series with those two on any trail. I wish we got the diesel engine in the USA. Very nice looking rigs.

You're right. It'd take 2 of those to kick 1 100 series! One to ride and one to pull the other out!
