Wouldn't a 40 be better for the Rubicon?

I'm thinking about having my driveway widened. My wife will kill me....

Did they ever beef up there drivtrain at all or is it still super wuss? course spline pinions are bad but imagine having a 4 spline pinion....

All I got out of your post was that 80s were dangerous and that even Toyota said so. Now, are you backing away from what you said? You can't have it both ways you know.

40s pretty much make 80s look silly on the Rubicon, but they are not better trucks. Definitely more fun to drive through there.

From an observation standpoint, since I'm no engineer, the scariest thing about a 100 is the steering links. That spindly IFS rack and pinion stuff is just too small in my opinion. Fortunately the differential serves as a fuse.:D .....

You talking about Post #24? This one? Nice try!:

We all have different experiences.

Here in AZ most my 80 friends have cooling issues. They swap radiators, buy new electric fans, try anything to get them to run so the A/C doesn't shut down. That's just one example. My '93 doesn't do this. My '97 sucks. No 100's do it because it was addressed.

Same with brakes. 80's are simply dangerous. 100's are world class. My 100 with 35's blows away an 80 with 31's.

Sunroof? 120K and the 100 is silent. The '97 with 120K creaks and cracks when closed 24/7. Can't eliminate it.

It's these things in which I refer too. Yes, my 80's have been reliable but their build quality and durability don't compare to the 100.

Dang.....ride in the 80 all day then come home and go to dinner in the 100. 5 seconds inside after startup and you know you have a completely different class vehicle.

Not trying to start another war....but damn....it's not rocket science to know how much better built the 100 is....Toyota even says so.

You've now revealed how you have taken things out of context. You're creating words and opinions by yourself.

"Brakes" were in one sentance and "better built" is in another. (Referring to ALL the improvements Toyota made in the 100...like frame, body, and yes....brakes.)

And since you ask about brakes and better built?

The UZJ100 offers much shorter stopping distances, much better pedal feel/control, two-mode ABS for 4-Hi and 4-Lo, and are fully operable with the engine OFF. Sounds like improvements to me.

So admire the heck out of your 80-series. I do too. But not admitting the above improvements leaves you in denial. :)

The R&P steering's been bad for me....though nobody else.

I'm on #3 though we all know I only wheel fire roads. :D

ok now it's like watching a one-legged man in a ass-kicking contest... I think the important thing is that the 100 is a brilliant, but different, suv. It's perfect for those that value the daily drive circuit more than the trail. It's great on trails too, but not as sharply focused as the 80- which is not necessaraly a bad thing.

Both have weaknesses, but bottom line is drive what you love right?

Correct!

Sure is interesting though on this thread that the front diff R&P info from Slee came up. He's probably making it up to dig at me. :D I look forward to hearing the reason why they're breaking. Hope he finds out.

Christo has mentioned the R&P on many occaisions. I believe in almost every 80 vs 100 thread. It is not new info. There are threads on different owners blowing front diffs so this should not be news to anyone.

Except that only on the most recent ones has he pushed toward not blaming the diff. Plus, his frequency is up.

Why would you want ABS in 4low? I don't get that...

More control. Have you ever moved quickly in 4-lo in between obstacles (a short good section of the trail) and seen a big ditch ahead that you need to slow for? A sudden turn down a hill. An oncoming quad? It works...it's works safely...AND..........when crawling it knows to not operate. That's the beauty of it. :) It's transparent and has never hindered me on the trail in how many trips? It only helps.
