OK...couple of things? What year? Is it the '03 Turbo? Hmmm....it has TRAC and VSC though that's not a cure-all so it won't climb every icy hill.

She hit the gas? OK....like that faults the 100? I have friends that have broke their R&P in an 80 buy strapping somebody in reverse. Also, by BACKING up hard obstacles.

???

Dont you get tired of this?

You say its the best thing since sliced bread. Well wheel the Rubi then. Although I have never been there if a stock jeep, fj,100 series support vehicles can be driven thru it, it could not be all that hard. Hell if you are afraid of tight spaces meet everyone at GSMTR07 there are plenty of trails there that are not tight at all...But Im willing to bet its going to put one hell of a beating on your rig. You can follow me and a few of other wagons. Heck you can try and keep up with my girlfriend in her 80...

Just let it go man....its a 100, not delivered by god, not a solid front axle...each cruiser has somthing great about them, just let it go at that.

Well, at least I'm understanding the truth. I would say start a church, but I think you are going to have trouble getting people to leave the Church of latter day 80's.

LMAO

I won't cast the first stone. :D Plus, I must be a hypocrit? I haven't left that 80's church yet. :D

;) .... I think Andy's summary got lost in the mire but he summed up how I feel

Haha...I remember that from a while back...cm05 maybe?

IF you know of 7 100s that broke I wonder what the real total is for the CO snowstorms and do other IFS vehicles (Tahoes, expeditions, etc) have this same issue?

GREAT question!

Also Mr. Slee.....did any of the 7 that broke have an ARB front diff in it?

back to the tech issues now guys...!

I have to say that Christo's point is one I didn't know about in such pointed terms... Food for thought, all right...

Solutions?

Doesn't matter, you shouldn't have to put an ARB in the front of a stock truck to keep it from blowing out while driving around on the pavement in the snow.

True....however since no vehicle is perfect it would be smart to find solutions to the weak parts.

(like knowing the lower 4 bolts holding the steering arm onto the knuckle housing can loosen and/or break off on an 80-series, your wheel can come off and you're dead....like almost happened to my son and has happened to others. Thank God he caught it and we have new revised studs and washers on there) :)

I actually enjoy these discussions of the comparison between 80's and 100's. It's a bummer that they usually go to hell.

Comparing these two vehicles helps identify the incredible capabilities of each.

I wasn't aware of the 100's potential diff damage in certain ice spin conditions. That alone makes the thread a benifit for me.

No, but unless the ARB was turned on, I do not believe it would make a difference. The reason the ARB is better is that the front TRAC will not do anything if the ARB is locked.

Christo: Do you think the alloy front diff housing is allowing sufficient flex to enable this problem...or not?

I do not think so. The teeth was broken clean off. I would think that a flex situation would be more of a bunch of gears sheared off. The pinion was not damaged at all. I can take pictures.

I believe it broke one tooth off, then it got wedged (was still like that when we opened it) and as I drove it, it broke the other ones.

I will take some pics and post.

The only reason I post this is John's choice that he would use TRAC in certain situations, rather than a locker. I would not. If I were to do the Rubicon, I would pull the fuse on it.

That is great to know- thanks Christo, things good do come out of this thread even if you have to read through all the personal attacks. I look forward to seeing your shop and drulling at all the stuff I want to buy - l ike bulls write up.

I admit I wanted a '97 80 after reading a mag article of "one of the best 4X4's of all time" and still ended up with a 100 for the comforts of on-road driving.

My normal practice is to lock the rear first. It really saves on the tires as TRAC is much tougher on them.

In wierd off-camber loose stuff where I could slide sideways into trouble, my money is on TRAC and I'll take the risk.

I was fully locked a month ago and hopping pretty good (and for about 3 or 4 times) while 3 of the 4 wheels were climbing different ledges. I got nervous but all was well despite the bent rear arm. Another 100 blew on the same spot.

I always lock if I get the JERK JERK JERK from TRAC. Gotta play it safe.

Fixed ;)

Wow, you're away from MUD for a day and look what happens...

After John brings his 100 on the `Con this August and proves us all wrong, he will have the opportunity to be the very first 100 on Fordyce! Then we'll really be eating our words!

(I haven't actually done it yet, though I know of several 80s who have - most say it is tougher than Rubicon, and I'm waiting for my MOG to be done before I tackle it... I am a :princess:)

Hey John, then we can head south and tackle Hammers and make it a trifecta!
