2004 LC with 188k that makes a whirring clinking dinking sound only when I put in Reverse or Drive. No sound in Neutral or Park. I notice it when I back in or out of the garage, maybe because the sound can reflect better. It almost sound like a small fan rubbing against a thin metal. It is more high pitched, than a thud. I will bring this vehicle in to The Car Care Nut in a couple of days, but I wanted opinions from the forum. BTW, the exhaust manifold has already been replaced.

Cheers!

I'd look for a loose bit of heat shielding around the exhaust and driveline.....thin stamped aluminum pieces, based on your description. Could just be a vibration induced rattle.

That is what it sounds like, but I don't know why it makes such a big difference when in Drive or Reverse. Thanks.

Is it related to engine speed, or to wheel speed? If it's wheel speed, it could be a brake rotor shield.

Actually, neither. The only thing that changes is if I put it in forward or reverse. With my foot on the break, in these gears, I hear the noise. If it’s in neutral, the market lead diminishes. This is being stationary.
But, I agree it does kind of sound like that brake shield sound.
It actually sounds like a weed whipper hitting an aluminum yard light post for those of you who have had this experience.

I’ll see what Ahmed, the Car Care Nut, finds out. Thanks for commenting.
