Someone else chime in here, but if I were in the position of having to replace my transmission, I think I would be more inclined to search out a low-mile used one, rather than having a local mechanic rebuild it. I figure the factory can build a better unit than someone local.
As an example, I did a quick search on car-part.com, and found a 70,000 mile A750 for $1,850.......if the case is in good shape, I'd rather have a Japanese-built tranny than a Ridgeland-built one.
Oh, OK. Didn't know that. I may have misunderstood your post. Is the trans shop suggesting THEY rebuild it or are they quoting $3,500 to install a Toyota reman unit?
Either way, I'd do what Bomar/Nolen suggested first. If that doesn't work, installing a Toyota reman unit is definitely the way to go over a used one........I just assumed a factory trans would be WAY more than that (in fact, toyodiy.com had it priced at over $6k)
I picked up the 100 today before they started working on it. Patsy from Furr Transmission was great about explaining their thought process and told me to think about it before I spent that much money. They think it is the overdrive planetary gears that have worn and so it needs a new gears. They said they have had several lexus and 4runners with the problem. It would come a 12 mo 12,000 mile warranty. They were against flushing it because they think it has no possibility of helping. They offered to drop the pan and look for debris.
That being said... My plan is to take it to 49 Tire Friday to get the transmission flushed. If that doesn't fix it then I am going with the reman transmission from Toyota. Herrin Gear was pretty competitive to the rebuild. Jacque gave me a price of $2500 for a reman unit which is great but shipping here and core back may negate the cost savings. Either way I will use the quote to get some knocked off if I go that route.
Would be a tough decision for me. I have put a lot of time and effort in the LC...but if I had to do it over again, I might have gone a different route. Will see what the adjuster says when they look at it.
Not sure I would by it back. I would take off what I have added and buy a newer, lower mileage better cared for one to replace it.

If the remanuf. One from TOD winds up being a real money saver, I'm sure we could arrange some kind of mud ship. My business takes me to Shreveport all the time, so I could easily meet someone at the TX line, etc, then drive it to Vicksburg the next day. Would be glad to do this.

Thanks guys for the shipping offers. We will see if it comes to that.
Last question on this damn topic. I've seen a lot of comments on mud saying using pressure flushers are bad because it pushes debris around. Several suggest just a full drain. Seen as mine already is having some symptoms, do I need that pressure to possibly clean out the problem?
