100 on the Rubicon?

A 40 series (or the near stock Jeep I was driving) can just walk through that trail without a spotter and no drama. Not because a 40 (or Jeep) is a better trail vehicle than an 80 or 100, but because they ARE better for the Rubicon.

It was like the trail was molded a millenia ago for a 93" Wheelbase.

You're comments are spot-on in my less-than-expert opinion.

We ran the Martinez Canyon Loop yesterday. Five 80's on 35's, one 80 on 33's, and a Jeep. The trail is much more difficult than the last time you and I ran it. There were numerous places where the 80's struggled. One landed in a washout and was strapped. In all the bad spots where we struggled...the Jeep drove through like nothing.

One observation....I'd bet my 100 would of been an easier drive than my 80 on THIS TRAIL. There are so many rocks everywhere now, we were always hung on our diffs. With the 100 I only have 1 diff to worry about rather than 2. The front ground clearance is substantially higher than the 80.

No ONE vehicle is best on EVERY trail.

Whoa Nelly. I don't think we have a chance to show off to 80-owners on the RUBICON. Trail is very tight and that's the 100's main problem. Size.

Wish I had that problem.

On the Rubicon, size ain't the 100's biggest problem. Trust me.

My 100 will NEVER be retired ( well, unless it stalls on some train tracks or something !)...

I cant wait until I really F*&% mine up so I can start cutting and chopping into it, making it even more capable... and really, really UGLY !!

If I could only afford ONE Cruiser, no doubt it would be a 100. I'd take it everywhere, pinstripe it, and risk damage...AS I DID the first 2 years I owned it until I bought my '93. Overall it's the superior Cruiser IMO and it's more than capable for ALL trails up to "Rubicon difficulty". I'd never be happy with an 80 now that I've owned and wheeled a 100.

Since I can afford more Cruisers I've built them for different purposes. The 100 is retired from the most difficult trails and brush. I now carry clippers.

The LX450 is better suited for those toughest trails (like the Rubi) because it's smaller, and has a nipple more articulation, AND it's cheaper. So, the LX is our new dedicated trail rig since I'm giving the '93 away.

I plan on another 100 (used this time) and will dedicate it's design for the same use as the LX450. Cut the frame down, fab stuff on, L-shocks, 36's and it'll see the Rubi.

My 100 is running the moderate trails now and going on the long trips (like to CO).

Solid axle rigs will always do better than the 100 on these difficult trails.

With that being said, the IFS 100 series finished the Dakar Rally towards the top of the production class again, just like they always do. There were several solid axle Land Cruisers in the production class too. They all took around twice as many hours to finish Dakar as the IFS rigs did.

So yah, solid axle spanks IFS in the rocks, and IFS is superior everywhere else.

And 80 series wagons get spanked by shorter and lighter solid axle rigs like FJ40's and Heeps.

You can only defy physics so much before reality sets in.

With that being said, I think the 80 series is the best compromise ever. I wish I could own multiple vehicles like Schotts does, he's really got the best of both worlds.

I'm well aware of that. I was there, and helped spot it over some of the rough stuff. My point was, YOU (not Amando) have never done anything like the Rubicon in your 100.

Also,our 100 was bought for a different purpose in mind. I don't feel the need to duplicate what I have in the 80 (that's why I have the 80). The 100 is being built up, but for family camping and expeditionary-type use, NOT rocks. Also, I prefer to avoid any possible warranty issues with major mods until that factory warranty expires. Finally, this is our primary baby carrier, so it can't be lifted too high or my wife (and I) would never be able to get the car seat inside.

John, hard as it may be for you to believe, I don't actually go out and make it my mission in life to cut people down in on-line forums, usually because I make some pretty dumb comments myself. I try to take everything on a per-post basis, regardless of who the poster is. You just happen to have a very high percentage of "talk out the ass" comments, hence my perceived "targeting." (And I don't think I'm the only one in that regard. Wonder why...?)

Tell you what John, FWIW, if you bring your 100 through the Rubicon from Loon Lake to Tahoe (or vice versa), I promise to never again make another negative comment on the dogma of John Schotts' wheeling his 100. Heck, I think Gatekeeper has been dynamited, so that's one less major obstacle for you to worry about!

You just don't get it? Sorry my friend. I have nothing to prove to you or anyone else about the 100. It is what it is, just like any other vehicle. One trail proves nothing about OVERALL capability anyway.

Heck, if I brought Scott's (Expo West) Jeep Wrangler with 2.5" lift and 33-inch tires I'd embarass ALL the 55-80 series on the Rubi. You know this. A well equipped FJ40 will do the same. Does that make the Jeep a better vehicle OVERALL? NO!

You need to take a deep breath. Nobody needs to prove to you or anyone else about a 100's capabilites. There's no ONE supreme vehicle. I've wheeled with Land Rovers that eat alive my and your Cruisers...and on trails like Rubicon. (and Scott, you know who's LR I bet?)

Anyway, back on-topic...

I read that the FJ uses the 120 Series platform (Land Cruiser Prado). Duh, I never made the connection, since they always say it is built on the NEW 4Runner/Taco platform. But, those two trucks are also on the 120 platform! So I guess we can call it a REAL Land Cruiser...?

For our non-U.S. brethren, I have always heard that most people prefer the original Prado (90 Series) to the 120. Anyone know why? Should this be its own thread?

If that has been your real intention, for the above to be believed, you probably need to go back and edit quite afew posts here, and elsewhere, so they actually convey that message a little better.


As for the 120, it is a better touring vehicle and nicer alla round than the 90, and the 120 is very close to the 80 in size.

Believe whom you like. I didn't start the 100 crud on the thread. Why so many want me to bring my 100 on the Rubicon? I don't get it.
