Hi, I have been surfing through old threads and cannot seem to find an answer so I am hoping someone here can help steer me in the right direction.

Can anyone tell me what rear ends or third members are compatible with the 2000 lx470? Mine is shot, and I am having a tough time finding a used replacement. I was hoping there may be other toyota/lexus rear ends or third members that I might be able to swap in. I am half way decent with a wrench but admittedly pretty ignorant when it comes to this.

thanks in advance for any suggestions or help.

Jody

#1: What do you mean by "...mine is shot". You state "rear ends" so just curious how it got ruined. Or did you blow the front diff? And if so how do you know what is wrong?

In any case try Car-Part.com--Used Auto Parts Market as they have several rear 3rds from 2000-2002 LX470.

hi spressomon, thank you for the reply. i began hearing a whirring from the rear end. parked it at work, but apparently not soon enough. climbed under and checked fluid- 1 1/2 qts low!

the business next doorto my work is the repair facility for a large used car dealer. asked one of the guys to take a look. he put it on a rack, and told me the pinion was shot(among other things). it was just a favor, they only do their own vehicles, so he is not trying to sell me something. but i am sure i did not have to go much past 1 1/2 qts low an to get an ouch or a what an idiot comment.

it is wht it is, and i was stupid for not checking it, but no leaks and no signs i could detect before hand so i am a little stumped.

thanks for the link and site, i appreciate it,

I blew a pinion bearing earlier this spring...but not my fault but the @#$^&*< arsehole that set up the 3rds.

IIWY I'd, assuming you are capable, pull the 3rd member out and take a look. You might just need the pinion bearing which would be a whole lot less than buying another 3rd and having it shipped. You can probably figure about $200 labor to install the pinion bearing which would include redoing the R&P install; probably $100 parts unless something else is toast; can of the Right Stuff gasket maker is about $20. You have to take it out anyway...that's what I would do for starters.

That 3rd is heavy so have a buddy help remove it or use a floor jack with a large plate to assist or crate.

If you just need a new R&P, the 98-02 LX/LC will be the same. If you are swapping the entire carrier, then there are differences between 98/99 and 00-02. If you are up to a challenge and upgrade, find a 98/99 LC carrier or complete rear axle with the optional locking differential. OEM ATRAC/Rear locker would be nice... well, if you need something like that.
