So I've tried the search function (admittedly, I'm not good at using it) and looked at the technical links. The consensus seems to be that 10/84 was when the H55F swap became possible, however I've read that up till late 1985 it can be extremely difficult due to the drivelines being the wrong lengths.

What I was wondering is, could you just rob parts from a late 85 or newer and use those instead of altering 1984 parts? It seems that that would make the install smoother and more stable.

P.S.
Thanks to everyone on here who has answered my questions. I'm finally getting close to finishing my FJ!

It isn't a big deal. I've done it on my 4/84 FJ60 and there is no difference in the conversion except resizing the driveshafts, which is a trivial 1 day exercise at a driveline shop and about $75 per shaft to get done.

Really, don't let that stop you. It's a great mod to the FJ60.

yea 85 and later it is supposedly a direct bolt it gig with no driveline mods being needed. and everything before that you would need to get the driveline redone. not a big deal really. at most places round here the $75 bux will get it to nearly any length you want and fully balanced.

I spent 120 for a new driveshaft after i bent my old one only thing he reused was the yolks. no balance tho as i has a bad u joint. however i still have no vibration as my truck just isnt fast enough.

Did this to a friend's rig, no big deal. Retain your crossmember and bellhousing, steal the drivelines AND DIFF FLANGES if you can. Otherwise, it's a cheap mod at the shop and well worth it.

Thanks

Thanks for the info guys! I w a little discouraged by what I'd head before, but I am pretty sure I want to do this ASAP now. Of course, I still need to get the lift on so that I haven't wasted $2700 of it and tires for no reason...THEN H55F, gears? maybe? and engine work...

And since you're getting the drivelines modded, might as well put the crawl box in while you're at it. :D
