1" wheel spacers/centramatic wheel balancers/cv front driveshaft/4.88/locking hubs

Just thought I would report that I put on 1" wheel spacers, centramatic wheel balancers, and shortened front CV shaft from tacoma on my truck tonight. The spacers got rid of my very mild rubbing at full lock, I still need to figure out where the rub will be at full compression, but I will let my tires mark those points for me to hack off at later date.

The centramatic wheel balancers work great when mounted to a wheel that is already well balanced (again I recommend the Hunter GSP9700). Any vibration I used to have is now gone...and will most likely stay gone unless I loose an entire lug or something (which I still think the wheel balancer would be able to accomodate without too much worry).

The 1" wheel spacers are as large as one can go before loosing too much of the hub surface to mount the wheel onto...(don't forget we have hubcentric wheels, so they need a nice resting place). The centramatic wheel balancers would fit the rear without the spacers, but WILL NOT fit the front without the spacers (as the caliper gets in the way ).

Also, the bolt that holds the spacers on to the hub protruded ever so slightly out of the outer surface of the spacer itself. Would not be an issue with our stock wheels as they have a slight indentation built into the wheel at this location (almost like they were ready for spacer nuts). Howerver, since I used a centramatic wheel balance between my spacer and wheel surface, I did have to torque the bolts on pretty good to FORM MOLD the balancer to fit the contours of the uneven mating surface. When I took the wheel off after this step, I had a newly adapted (molded) wheel balancer. There was no 'wobble' to the wheel aftwards...if you were wondering. OH and I used BLUE locktite to keep it from vibrating loose.

I finally got around to installing the shortened Tacoma x-cab v6 4x4 rear CV shaft. Works great. car-part.com sometimes has them for under 100.00. You can then get them shortened and balanced for around 60 bucks. I had a shaft dropped shipped from non-local junk yard to tom woods and he ships it back for free.

oh, and I am now 4.88 geared and have locking/unlocking hubs installed.

If anyone is interested, I can give a long term report in a few months...going to San Juan mountains with LSLC/GCC/TAC this august.

edited to add pictures:

**with the following pic you can see where the balancer shows indentations from "pressing" into the bolt heads of the spacer to the hub. it was thin aluminum and molded nicely.

Kumar, sounds like you are making progress - What no pictures

What locking hub did you use?
Are your outer axles stock? - (The long ones)
How thick of a spacer did you use on the axle? - Prior to the snap ring

Phil

heh...no pics...very greasy hands, no helper to take the pics. Next time I take a wheel off, I'll snap a few.

I used the mini truck hubs (mid 80s)
yes, stock outer axles
I only used one EXTRA snap ring per side (had a couple extra laying around)...ideally I would need a few more, but just didn't have any on hand. Mark Brodis has been running without spacers for over a year now, and has not had any issues (and he goes wheeling a lot), so i'm not too worried.

Kumar,I attempted to do the hub conversion on my 96 with FJ60 Aisin hubs with no luck. I machined the spacer to position the axle stub in same location as with the factory flange (I used a mic to determine the thickness .28). With the spacer installed the snap ring comes in contact with the rotating part of the hub (the part you turn to lock and unlock) preventing the complete assembly of the hub. Doing it the way you did It (1 additional snap ring) will assemble but with minimum clearance. The problem I have with you and Mark did it is that what keeps the axle from walking out to it original location and coming in contact with the lock/unlock knob.

Do I have a different hub (I have been told by several sources that the mini and the 60 hubs are the same???)
Do I assemble it without the spacer and say F-it and don’t look back?
Should I contact Mark and see if he has ever disassembled and inspected the hub since installed?

Any thoughts?

I would doubt the "walk out" would do much in the ways of keeping things from working well..shoot, according to what you posted, it might be good to leave a bit of "slack" in the outer axle by only shimming it partially...not to .28

Otherwise, I'm by no means a hub expert, so I don't know if the MINI hubs have more "depth" to them when compared to the 60 series hub.

I would say machine your spacer down a bit, and retry. But i'm an idiot that runs 37" krawlers on his DD...nuff said ;)

What years for the tacoma xcab v6 4x4 rear CV shaft?
Thanks,
Sean

79+ fj40/55/60/62 and 85 and earlier mini truck hubs are the same(expect in hub dial color)

Sean, with Kumar's grace (hopefully) http://kumar.fzj80.com/Misc/driveshaft.html
BTW, there are a bunch of these in southern CA junkyards!

OF COURSE!!! Thanks!

I beleive ANY "Tacoma" named truck will suffice...But it HAS to be the 4x4 x cab v6 (maybe 4 cyl, but not sure)

Kumar,

Definately the best looking LX I've seen. Those Tundra wheels look great. I'm planning something a little different for my 80, but those Tundra wheels have me second-guessing!

I was all ready to go on the San Juan trip, but am now unable. Damn, I'd have liked to see your Lex in person.

You need to come out to the LSCR in Katemcy in March.

Post some pice of those spacers!

Thanks! ah you can come, just tell your employer to shove it...:)

I'm actually moving to ATL in a few months, took a new job recently...if I have time in March, I may swing by.
