i am looking at a 91 SWB landcruiser with a 1 pz engine, i have basic mechanical understanding but am very new to 4x4s and landcruisers.

i noticed alot of oil on the front diff. i took the vehicle for a drive of about 35 kilometers and checked again. there is alot more oil everywhere and it is difficult to say where exactly it is coming from, the front right corner of the oil sump has been sealed with silicon and there seems to be a slight leak there. i am more concerned that directly above this oil seems to be coming out from behind the fly wheel and belts.

What could be the cause of this higher leak and would it be very costly to repair?

Thanks for your time

heating the sealant up.
is your pinion seal leaking? Those are cheap and easy to fix.

if you are looking at it to buy then get the seller to wash the vehicle before you come for your next test drive.
warm it up, take a look
drive 1 km, take a look
drive 5 km, take a look
drive 10 km, take a look

or just walk away.

thanks all,

took it for a drive and then to a work shop who said that the leak was coming from the rear crankshaft oil seal......

the seller has since replaced it and we took the vehicle for a longer drive about 500kms ....the leak on the rear crankshaft seal has returned.

best to walk away from this i think.... can a crankshaft "wobble" and then loosen this seal? What would cause these seals to keep failing? one was a genuine toyota seal the other not.

thanks for the help

Crushers,

yes i think best to leave this one. impoper installation and then this is likely to keep happening......

the pz1 u rebuilt looks fantastic and the is a great thread to read ...

well, what this says to me is:
IF he had the seal installed and it is leaking already then the bloke that did the work is careless. if the same bloke did other work on the truck what was the quality of that workmanship?
if he DIDN"T change it out and said he did then that makes him a liar, what else is he lying about?

just say'n it might be better to walk unless the truck is dirt cheap and you can afford to lose the money.

the chap has a good reputation and only works on landcruisers, he has replaced the seals as i watched him do it and he works carefully, the finnish on the rest of the truck is good given the circumstances here in africa, availability of parts etc etc.....

his reasoning why the original seal went is that the seals may have been in the shop too long, plausable given that 1pz parts are not that easy to find in africa, 1hz a different story. now that the 2nd seal has gone it is concerning, did he put it on wrong, is the groove worn out on the crankshaft of is it something more sinister from to much crankcase pressure? all questions that one must find out. whether it is worth all the trouble is a different matter. a nice little truck though.

all in all an interesting experience

if his reputation is good then that is comforting.
if his work is good and careful then it must be something else.
the rear engine seal is the same for the PZ as the HZ.
groving of the crank? that i would like to see.
dry seal, possible but then why install it?
oil level? oil pressure?
very dirty or dusty enviroment?

i love the PZ engine but something just isn't jiving here.

dusty and dirty yes very
oil level fine
pressure not sure?

i checked the first seal that went and it was hard and brittle.... also very easy to slide on and off

second seal seemed fine no cracks not hard etc ...and still tight...there was however a rubberish substance on the seal and crank, i remember he did slip whilst replacing it and some silicone sealant got onto the seal could this be the cause? maybe huh

there are quite a few 1pzs in malawi and zambia i think the canadian mining companies brought them in in the 90s for the copper mines here ....who knows

ummm, why would he continue if the seal was contaminated or the crank was ... well ... contaminated?

get him to remove the tranny and flywheel again, take a close look at the damaged seal and determine if that is actually the cause. a damaged seal will leak, no doubt there.
