It has probably been discussed before, but i didnt have any luck searching for it. The 07-09 4.0 has 239 hp, and the 10-12 4.0 have 260 hp and keep the same fuel economy? I am wondering if anyone has narrowed the gains down to a kit or list of parts that would upgrade the previous years to the performance of the new ones.... I have read that the new engines have roller rockers, that is the only thing I know for certain that is a bolt on difference. Maybe there is a different exhaust too? Anyway, you see where i am going with this, any knowledge on this would be appreciated, thanks.

Powertrain

The FJ Cruiser uses the 4.0-liter 1GR-FE DOHC V6. For the 2007 to 2009 model years, the engine came with single variable valve timing (VVT-i) which produces 239 hp (178 kW) at 5200 rpm, and 278 lb·ft (377 N·m) of torque at 3,700 rpm on 91 octane fuel.[21][22] For the 2010 model year, the FJ Cruiser's engine gained Dual VVT-i technology which adjusts timing on both intake and exhaust camshafts resulting in 260 hp (194 kW) at 5600 rpm, and 271 lb·ft (367 N·m) in addition to slightly improved fuel economy on 91 octane fuel.[21] The latest engine meets stringent LEV II/Tier 2 Bin 5 emissions certification[23] Both versions of the 1GR-FE engine run normally on 87 octane fuel[21] though they produce less power thus Toyota recommends premium fuel for demanding situations such as towing, off-roading, and driving at high elevation.

A lot of the gas mileage depends on how you drive and how much weight or how many modifications you have. If you drive 55 vs 85 the gas mileage is a lot different. It's a box on wheels. On the new engine the torque curve is different than the older engine now also.

i am wondering if the dual vvti is a bolt on piece/s or if it is more than that. it would be a cool hp mod if it was all bolt on.

More of a "bolt in" than a "bolt on" the dual vvti comes with an engine attached that has almost no common parts with the 07 - 09 engine....

Different heads
Different block
Different intake, all of it
Different oil filter and oiling system
Heck, even the spark plugs are different

I would also guess that the ECU programming is different also. It would probably be cheaper to trade-in/up than trying to retrofit...

Or just supercharge it. It's not cheap, but it's probably less expensive than buying a whole new FJ and there's alot more power as well.

Supercharging will kill Mpg because of physics and human nature

Not sure of the physics part, but the general consensus with these superchargers is that if you don't become a drag racer type driver (the human nature part), mpg is about the same. My experience is that is the case. I can't argue with the $/hp argument, but I think of it as a long term investment (I have no plans of ever getting rid of my FJC). Overall, it made the vehicle into a much more responsive machine.
